Jeanneret Hummer Merlot Shiraz 2016

Special Price $45.00 Regular Price $55.00
Massive- a big, dark and super rich red wine, yet smooth and textural. Plenty of oak, and good acidity. On the tasting panel, we kinda expected to hate this, given it's 16.3% alcohol – fair to say we were wrong!

The Clare Valley produces some of the finest Rieslings and Cabernet’s going around and Jeanneret uphold this tradition superbly. Jeanneret’s winemaker Ben found winemaking almost by accident, being handed the reins of a Clare Valley property by his dad who was working in Malaysia. After a little trial and error Ben found his feet and is making stunning wines. He has also added a brewery to the property. The Clare Valley Brewing Co uses a spring on the property to source water from well over 100m below the surface. The beers are packed with flavour and have amazing texture and mouthfeel.

130km north of Adelaide (and west of the Barossa), the Clare Valley sits within a high-altitude pocket granting the vineyards cool to cold nights with long, warm to hot summer days. This cooler climate grants thin-skinned (and indeed temperamental) grapes like rieslings a perfect climate in which to mature slowly without risk of mould during the harvest season. The resulting wines are perfumed, complex, softly flavoured yet powerful. There are several sub-regions in the 35km stretch of valley, pocketed with varying soils, altitudes and climates. West-facing, high-altitude slopes benefit from drying afternoon sun in summer, producing some of the region ... Read Full Article

Jeanneret Wines The son of self-starter Denis, Ben Jeanneret sticks to a philosophy of very truth-in-the variety winemaking. As he states on his web site: "I am not too fussed if nature beats me and wild yeasts begin the ferments. I encourage minimal handling of the juice, allowing the ferments to progress in a slow and easy manner." Ben uses no river water to irrigate his vineyards, and bravely lets that wild yeast talk in his wines, adding fragrant ripples to his Riesling. Picking up trophies as early as 1996, that Riesling speaks volumes about Ben's approach being right for the wine, and led to he and partner Carissa represent Jeanneret at the Y ... Read Full Article

There are several sub-regions in the 35km stretch of valley, pocketed with varying soils, altitudes and climates. West-facing, high-altitude slopes benefit from drying afternoon sun in summer, producing some of the regions best vintages. The vines are planted from 400 to 500 metres (1,300 to 1,600 ft). The higher altitude, compared to other wine regions in South Australia, ensures cool nights even during the heat of summer allowing the fruit to ripen more evenly and slowly. Soil is a mix of red to brown-grey over basement rock.

One of only three labels selected to participate.

Recently, the 2008 Doozie Riesling picked up Gold at the London International Wine Challenge, proving Ben's approach is no passing fad. Just good fruit talking in the glass, as it should be.
