Imported Red Wines

New Imported Reds have landed! We taste hundreds of wines every year at the largest wine fair in the world, Prowein, which is staged in Dusseldorf over several days in March each year. Over 5,000 wineries from around the globe show up to promote their kit to wine trade buyers. To give this context, that is more than twice as many wineries as there are in Australia. With pre-booked meetings it is possible to taste up to 200 wines a day, and 500+ across the event. We taste hundreds more at Vinitaly, a wine fair specific to Italian producers that presents the wares of over 4,000 producers across 5 days. Then there are tastings at the wineries we visit in person to gain a deeper understanding of what, why and how they make the superb wines they do. Before we make a decision to import a wi ...

  1. Alberto Bartali Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
    $150.00
Brunello di Montalcino (brown one of Montalcino), is made from 100% Sangiovese from the Brunello di Montalcino region, which along with Barolo, was the equal first Italian wine region awarded DOCG status, the highest available. It is considered one of the greatest wines on earth. Made from a local clone of Sangiovese, called Prugnolo Gentile, which is thicker skinned, more tannic and acidic than the sangio clones of Chianti and elsewhere in Italy, Brunello is prized for its intensity and depth of flavour and ageability. The Bartali is a full bodied and sense enveloping wine, packed with cherries, tobacco, herbs, spice, espresso, leather and more. Powerful, long, persistent and finished with robust but fine tannins. This is already exceptional and will age magnificently. Learn More
  2. Alberto Bartali Chianti Riserva DOCG 2020
    $60.00
2020 was a low cropping, intensely fruited vintage - fairly consistently warm and foliage was retained until harvest; qualities which have led to an excellent vintage! This is a powerful wine with plenty of chalky tannins, so double decant a few hours before getting stuck into this one, and when you do, consider pairing with a lump of quality protein - will work beautifully with this wine's tannin profile. Red fruits here, dried cherries, tobacco, spice, hints of balsamic, oregano, coffee and more. This is complex, powerful and long, delightful now with a decant and one you can cellar for more than a decade. Learn More
  3. Alberto Bartali Morellino di Scansano DOCG 2021
    $65.00
Morellino di Scansano, means Sangiovese from Scansano, Scansano being a hilly coastal reqion of Maremma in Tuscany which is renowned for its dry climate, volcanic soil and maritime climate. This is a 'first selection' Scansano, with exceptional fruit fermented and aged in oak. There's Cherry, tobacco, tomato and leather here, with excellent fruit concentration and finish which is replete with chalky tannins. Learn More
  4. Alberto Bartali Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2022
    $65.00
Rosso di Montalcino is Sangiovese from Montalcino, often declassified Brunello. With its fruit intensity and 12 months ageing in oak, this is very much in the baby Brunello mould. It’s a big brooding wine with black and sour cherries, spice and excellent intensity and length. Drink anytime over the next decade. Learn More
  5. Alberto Bartali Terraiolo Organic Chianti DOCG 2021
    $50.00
2021 is one of the finest Chianti vintages in living memory, rated at 98/100 by Wine Spectator Magazine. This is a superb organic Chianti intended for consumption over the next 5-10 years. It has the expected fruit intensity and tannin grip of a young Chianti so decant and enjoy this with protein if you are drinking in the next 5 years. Red fruits and leather here, dried cherry, salami, espresso and a waft or two of high quality tobacco. Lovely! Learn More
  6. Ca 'Botta Alta Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore 2020
Special Price $60.00 Regular Price $65.00
A stunning Valpolicella made using the Ripasso method, or 'repass'. Highest quality, high altitude Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone are fermented on the pressed skins of an Amarone ferment, giving higher alcohols, colour and a good degree more complexity. A moreish and complex red wine that pairs majestically with roast meat and ragu. Learn More

  8. Ca 'Botta Cerviero Rosso Veneto 2020
Special Price $79.00 Regular Price $89.00
In theory this is an entry level wine for Ca’ Botta, carrying the IGT designation rather than the more favoured DOC or DOCG status. Why? Because this is a wine made using Amarone methods using primarily Amarone varieties with the inclusion of Cabernet which is not allowed in Amarone production... They add Cabernet to build freshness and change the tannin profile... to make something as good but a little different to a traditional Amarone. 2.2 kilos of fruit are needed to make just one bottle. Structural, black and intense, with complex flavours, fruit sweetness and exceptional length. A wonderful opportunity to try an exceptional Amarone style wine from the region. Learn More
  9. Ca 'Botta Rubicondo 2019
    $55.00
Black, rich, concentrated and savoury, this wine is made from 14-day air dried, traditional regional grapes Corvina and Rondinella softened by Merlot. It offers black fruits, spice and cedar. The fruit sweetness is excellent and well balanced by savory touches. An absolute bargain. Learn More
  10. Ca 'Botta Torcinato Valpolicella Superiore 2018
Special Price $89.00 Regular Price $99.00
Our 3rd vintage of the Torcinato, and absolutely the finest to date. This is a big and exceptionally well-structured and refined wine which requires at an hour in a decanter before drinking. It is powerful yet silky smooth, with intense red and blue fruits, cola, tobacco, blackberries, cherries and fresh thyme. Fruit is air dried prior to fermentation for 45 days meaning that 1.6 kg of fruit are required to make each bottle! Learn More
  11. Ca Vegar Bardolino DOC 2023
Special Price $50.00 Regular Price $60.00
Its bigger than Pinot, and of course has a different flavour profile, but in the UK plenty of punters who drink Pinot are equally enamoured of Bardolino. 'But it is made from the same grapes as Amarone', we hear you say. It is, and Bardolino is only half an hour from that region, but the wines are altogether brighter and far more delicate than you'll find there. This Bardolino sees about 6 months in oak, followed by some time in tank prior to bottling – red fruits and violet form the nose. It is red fruity, pulpy and fleshy and finishes tight and dry, with excellent length, minerality, plenty of acid and fine tannins. Drink it with rich meaty dishes or oily fish. Definitely a food wine and absolutely worth decanting. Learn More
  12. Ca ’Botta Cajo Amarone DOCG 2016
    $180.00
Ca’ Botta’s highest quality fruit is air dried for 100 days prior to fermentation meaning that 2.2 kgs of fruit are required to make each bottle! This is incredibly, long, concentrated and complex… savour this over a few hours and you may well see black tea, spices, blackberries, cherries, rosemary, dark chocolate, prunes, green peppercorns, and coffee. Stunning. Learn More
