Other Red Wines
If your red wine tastes are a little more adventurous or you’ve had your fill of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, here you’ll find a few options to spice things up a bit. Tempranillo, Barbera, Lagrein, Nero D’Avola, Primitivo, Montepulciano, Negroamaro, Saperavi, Susumaniello… if the thought of these varieties has your heart racing, then welcome to the club. We love that Australia has started to embrace these more savoury, playful and food friendly styles… here’s a few that have particularly impressed us of late…
- After Five Wine Co. Single Vineyard Aglianico 2018Special Price $28.00 Regular Price $39.00Aglianico, perhaps like Nebbiolo is a wine of extremes. The nose, with red fruits and rose petals, is reminiscent of a light, perhaps delicate wine but the palate weight and tannins are at the other end of the scale. There’s rose petals, dark fruits and sage in the mix, liquorice, red fruit and a super long tannin finish. Definitely a food wine. Learn More
- After Five Wine Co. Single Vineyard Montepulciano 2019Special Price $28.00 Regular Price $39.00A wine that is both powerful and crunchy, with spice, black cherries, blanched beans and anise, plenty of acid and a fine tannin finish. In spite of its richness and depth, it also manages zest and liveliness. The tannins are powdery and then waxy. Magical and should satisfy both the hipsters and lumberjacks. Learn More
- After Five Wine Co. Single Vineyard Montepulciano 2021Special Price $32.00 Regular Price $39.00Fragrant and crunchy, with red apples and rhubarb, spice, marzipan, truffles, cherries, cedar and leather. - Allegiance Wines Single Vineyard McLaren Vale Graciano 2020$30.00Herbs, blue fruits and spice on the nose. Mulberries, blueberries, spice, dried herbs and black pepper on the palate. This is drink by itself friendly, food friendly and just generally friendly, but in a serious kinda way. Because there’s no mistaking this wine is both classy and very well put together. Learn More
- Ca'Botta Rubicondo 2019$55.00Black, rich, concentrated and savoury, this wine is made from 14-day air dried, traditional regional grapes Corvina and Rondinella softened by Merlot. It offers black fruits, spice and cedar. The fruit sweetness is excellent and well balanced by savory touches. An absolute bargain. Learn More
- Ca’Botta Cajo Amarone DOCG 2016$180.00Ca’ Botta’s highest quality fruit is air dried for 100 days prior to fermentation meaning that 2.2 kgs of fruit are required to make each bottle! This is incredibly, long, concentrated and complex… savour this over a few hours and you may well see black tea, spices, blackberries, cherries, rosemary, dark chocolate, prunes, green peppercorns, and coffee. Stunning. Learn More
- Ca’Botta Cerviero Rosso Veneto 2016Special Price $79.00 Regular Price $89.00In theory this is an entry level wine for Ca’ Botta, carrying the IGT designation rather than the more favoured DOC or DOCG status. Why? Because this is a wine made using Amarone methods using primarily Amarone varieties with the inclusion of Cabernet which is not allowed in Amarone production… They add Cabernet to build freshness and change the tannin profile … to make something as good but a little different to a traditional Amarone. 2.2 kilos of fruit are needed to make just one bottle. We found herbs, black fruits, cherries, spice and pepper here on a pallet which is both concentrated and ethereal. A cracking wine and an absolute bargain. Learn More
- Ca’Botta Pian Di Mezzo Amarone Riserva DOCG 2013$300.00Ca’ Botta’s highest quality fruit is air dried for 110 days prior to fermentation… in the process the fruit loses 60% of its original weight meaning that 3 kgs of fruit are required to make each bottle! This is an incredibly deep, concentrated and complex wine… savour this over a few hours and you may well see black and blueberries, almonds, leather, green pepper, cherries, dark chocolate and coffee. Stunning. Only 12 bottles available. Learn More
- Chalk Hill McLaren Vale Barbera 2021Special Price $25.00 Regular Price $28.00Light to medium bodied and perfumed with crunchy red fruits. High acid meets intense rhubarb and dark cherry. Consistently one of the best Barbera’s made in Oz. Learn More

- Curtis 38 Year Old TawnySpecial Price $70.00 Regular Price $100.00This Tawny has spent over 38 years in barrel slowly oxidizing and becoming aldehydic in the process. It is amber and brown in colour and packed with nuttiness and raisins. There is enough sweetness to make the palate lush and plenty of acid too which provides balance and a dry finish. A stunning fortified wine. Learn More
- Curtis Small Batch Durif 2021Special Price $60.00 Regular Price $80.00Durif is the genetic offspring of Shiraz and Pelourisin. It’s rare and we love it here at WD. It is drought tolerant and retains acidity and bright fruit even when very ripe. Handled well it makes fruit-dense yet lively wines with an inky core and a strong spine of acidity. Winemakers use phrases like ‘Shiraz on steroids' and ‘akin to drinking fountain pen ink’ to describe it. This Curtis edition is a little more elegant than most and packs plums, blackberries, black cherries, black olive, vanilla, cedar, and more into a thyme spritzed package which is gorgeously sumptuous.
