Clandestine Vineyards Hearts & Minds Grenache 2021

Special Price $55.00 Regular Price $60.00
McLaren Vale Grenache is some of the very best produced in the world and the elevated and slightly cooler Blewitt Springs sub-region has a strong claim to being its best site within the McLaren Vale. This Grenache is sourced from low-yielding, 70+ year old, Blewitt Springs vines. No herbicides or pesticides are used in the vineyard and the wine is vegan friendly. The fruit is handpicked and open fermented before being transferred into 15% new French oak for a year before bottling unfined and unfiltered. There are red fruits, florals and spice, black olives, fleshy plum, plentiful acidity, and wonderfully fine, powdery tannins. A stunning Grenache.

Clandestine Vineyards is 100% owned & operated by Nick and Trudy Stacy. Trudy’s background is in events and project management, Nick’s in fine wine. Nick sold his wine import and distribution business to LVMH in 2003 before creating Vinaceous Wines in 2007. After selling Vinaceous Wines in 2020 he and Trudy developed and launched Clandestine Vineyards; selecting 15 individual growers from the best regions across WA, SA and VIC for their sustainable vineyards practices. Low-fi winemaking from grape to glass follows to make small, unique parcels of exceptional wine. This Grenache, sourced from a 71 y.o. Blewitt Springs bush vine single vineyard is testament to the depth of their industry relationships. It is a stunner. Vegan Red Wines

Mr Riggs, Penny's Hill, Woop Woop, Zonte’s Footstep We often joke that there must be more than one Ben Riggs, that no one winemaker could have his hands in such a range of premium McLaren Vale wineries. And yet, after thorough research (we asked) he has not cloned himself. With 14 years making wine at Wirra Wirra alone, Ben's experience totals a quarter century of producing notable wines, including Penny's Hill, Tatiarra, and Cazal Viel in France. But his real love for McLaren Vale remains, and along with Tony Parkinson, he has crafted successful brands like Woop Woop and his own Mr. Riggs. With such a broad portfolio, Ben picks up awards ... Less than 40km south of Adelaide, McLaren Vale is another one of South Australia's renowned Shiraz producers, accounting for roughly 50% of grapes crushed annually. The climate is markedly different from the Barossa, being much more Mediterranean with four clear seasons and higher rainfalls. McLaren Vale reds reflect this, showing deep complexity and power along with the ability to cellar for decades. While Shiraz grabs the most attention, chocolate-rich Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays and Viogniers are worth sampling.

The climate is influenced by ocean breezes coming in from the Gulf of St. Vincent to the west and the altitude of the Sellicks Hill Range to the south. Soil type is varied, ranging from red-brown loam and sand to dark clay and the often-mentioned terra rosa. A misspell of the Italian phrase "terra rossa" (meaning "red soil"), this ruddy-red stuff is left behind when limestone breaks down, and any viticulturist will tell you it's great stuff to grow vines in due

We often joke that there must be more than one Ben Riggs, that no one winemaker could have his hands in such a range of premium McLaren Vale wineries.

Riggs.

With such a broad portfolio, Ben picks up awards with regularity. Twice named Bushing King (for making the best wine at the McLaren Vale Wine Show), and winning the first two Great Australian Shiraz Challenges. His wines have also won best in show at the Sydney International Top 100 (1991 Wirra Wirra "Angelus").
