Eight at the gate is a family affair, owned and managed by sisters Jane Richards and Claire Davies. The ‘eight’ references their 8 kids, oft found hanging off a gate in or near the vineyard in the early days. The Vineyard is large at well over 100 acres in the Wratonbully sub-region and the fruit is in high demand from wineries in the region. They keep a very small quantity of the best fruit for themselves and turn out exceptional wines, like the 2019 Family Selection Chardonnay, which was recently awarded the trophy for best Chardonnay and best white wine at the Limestone Coast Wine Show.

Shoulder pads, overalls and bike shorts saw this particular version of white wine with such a wooded vengeance, we were practically asking the chefs to take the butter out of the meals to make way for it. History

With vines dating back to the 1970's, Wrattonbully grew to fame in the early 90's when larger producers like Hardy's and Beringer Blass began planting. Primarily a red region, with shiraz and cabernet sauvignon in quantity.

Mount Benson, first planted in 1989, is a newcomer to the South Australian industry. It has quickly established itself as on par with it's older cousins, producing excellent cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, and chardonnay. Cool ocean breezes aid in producing complex, deeply flavoured wines.
