A ‘classic dry white’ style as best executed from the Margaret River Region. This offers a mix of passionfruit, lime zest, white pepper, nettles, greenery and herbs. A wine that works well both as an aperitif and with seafood.
Robert Oatley Wines was founded as a family winery in 2006 by the late Robert (Bob) Oatley AO BEM. Today the family business www.balmoralaustralia.com is led by Bob’s eldest son Sandy Oatley who, together with his father, brother and sister, planted the first Oatley family vineyards in the late 1960’s.
Robert Oatley Wines celebrates the memory of Bob Oatley through a trio of labels: the maritime-influenced Signature Series, the specific vineyard focused Finisterre, and the best of the best barrels under The Pennant. This week I am sipping on a Semillon from First Creek in the Hunter Valley. Semillon is a thing of beauty really. Drunk young it's fresh with juicy acidity, apple, pear, and loads of bright citrus notes. Kept in the cellar and it will reward you in 5, 10, and 20 years. As it develops it gets (I think) a little grassy, the acidity is less prominent and notes of honey start to form. Pick this up from winedirect.com.au at a bargain of $22 a bottle and the only thing you will complain about is having not bought 6-12 bottles!

Glug of olive oil
1 brown onion, diced
2 carrots, diced
2 sticks celery, diced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 large rasher bacon, chopped (bacon bones can also be used)
1 tin cannellini beans, rinsed
1 bunch kale, roughly chopped
2 fresh tomatoes, diced
1 tin diced tomatoes
200mL red wine
500ml vegetable stock (if you prefer a different stock, use it - I use vegetable for less salty interference)
A couple of bayleaves
Salt and pepper

History
Much of the regions success dates back to the late 1800's when Italian immigrants Albert Credaro, Jimmy Meleri and Domenic Garuccio planted vines to make some of the good old table wines from the Old Country. Some learned gents took a punt on commercial production in the late 1960's, with the recommendation of the very learned Dr. John Gladstone in mind. The Doc pointed out the Margaret River region cool climate would give growers a fine yield of fruit to work with. Too right he was!
