Yarra Valley wines were a mainstay of the Vic economy from the mid 1800s through about 1920. Changing economic circumstances saw a swift fall from grace as farmers shifted production to wool. Dr. Bailey Carrodus was a pioneer in the Yarra’s reemergence as a wine producing region. Having picked up a degree in horticulture in NZ and worked as a scientific consultant, he then completed a degree in winemaking at Roseworthy College in South Australia. He taught there for a while before heading to Oxford where he earned a Doctorate in Philosophy (plant physiology) in the 1960s. While there he was exposed to European wines and was inspired to undertake an extensive tour of France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. On return to Oz, he worked at Melbourne Uni with the intention of making wine when he retired. Apparently, his botany students made a lot of field trips to the Yarra Valley in the ensuing few years and in the process, he discovered the perfect site for his vineyard – free draining, good sun exposure and minimal risk of frost thanks to the site’s elevation. First plantings were in 1969 and Yarra Yering soon established a reputation for producing world class wines, which remains to this day.
