This is shy on opening, so decanting, or allowing time in glass is needed for this wine to blossom. Once open, this reveals itself as another exceptional Reserve Vickery Riesling. White flowers and lime aromatics lead a palate bursting with lemon juice, pith and zest, citrus blossom and more. Exceptional intensity of fruit, perfectly attenuated acidity and excellent length guarantee this wine a long life if well cellared.
According to Jeffrey Grosset, himself a legendary Riesling producer, John Vickery is in the same league as Max Schubert, the creator and initial maker of Penfolds Grange. Vickery has made Riesling since 1951, and even before refrigerated fermentation was possible, worked to ensure careful handling of fruit which was processed at as low a temp as possible to maximize natural fruit retention. He has picked up more than 50 trophies and 400 gold medals along with many personal accolades. He was also instrumental in the mainstream introduction of screwcaps for Rieslings produced from the 98 vintage. There was a great deal of market resistance at the time, given the perception of cork being superior and Screwcap being the ‘cheap’ option. Regardless, the Clare Valley Riesling producers got behind him and less than 20 years later screwcap is the norm. In 2007 he was awarded Order of Australia for services to the wine industry especially via the development of innovations in the production of Riesling.

They also co-own Vickery wines with John Vickery, the master and godfather of Australian Riesling. There aren’t too many staff orders that don’t feature a bottle or 3 of one of these wines.

Can't have party food without something to drink - can we?? Good party food is definitely bubbles but bubbles is such a cop-out. Let's make it a little more interesting and go with a deliciously juicy Riesling.
This week I am sipping on a Semillon from First Creek in the Hunter Valley. Semillon is a thing of beauty really. Drunk young it's fresh with juicy acidity, apple, pear, and loads of bright citrus notes. Kept in the cellar and it will reward you in 5, 10, and 20 years. As it develops it gets (I think) a little grassy, the acidity is less prominent and notes of honey start to form. Pick this up from winedirect.com.au at a bargain of $22 a bottle and the only thing you will complain about is having not bought 6-12 bottles!

As of 2004, Riesling was estimated to be the world's 20th most grown variety at 48,700 hectares (120,000 acres) with an increasing trend.
In terms of importance for quality wines, it is usually included in the "top three" white wine varieties together with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Riesling is a variety which is highly "terroir-expressive", meaning that the character of Riesling wines is clearly influenced by the wine's place of origin.
