The Delicious Alternative Red Dozen

We kick off with the celebrated Heirloom Alcala Grenache. The '22 picked up the Decanter Trophy for world's best Grenache in a substantial field of heavy hitting Grenache from Aus, France, Spain, California and more. There's also Lone Palm's Old Vine Grenache, a wine made in tiny quantities which we rate as highly as the Alcala. Then the Sieben Klon, a multi clonal, ethereal Barossa Grenache which is altogether lighter, but no less compelling. From there, excellent examples of Tempranillo, Montepulciano and Sangiovese made by Mike Farmilo, who used to make Penfolds Grange. These are genuinely excellent too!

Serious, old vines Grenache this- with a degree of intensity you don’t always find in Grenache. As with the incredible first vintage which sold out in just a few months, the 22 is bolstered with the inclusion of some powerful, low yielding, old vine Shiraz. The tannins are plentiful and savoury, the fruits black, flecked with reds and tightly coiled. Needs decanting, Officially awesome!

6 x Gold Medal, 1 x Trophy - Best Grenache in the World at Decanter Wine Awards
Another incredible Alcala Grenache – which has just picked up the Decanter World Wine Awards Grenache of the Year Trophy. First in a field of 89 entries from all over the world. Ripe plush fruits of strawberry and cherry without a hint of jamminess eats perfectly cedary French oak and gives you back this perfectly balanced and engaging, world-class wine.

The Lienert’s have been farming in the Barossa for 150 years and decided to add some vines to their property about 20 years ago. The first fruit from 2004 and 2005 vintages went straight to the pool room, aka into Penfold’s St Henri. Funnily enough they then planted a lot more vines and introduced many more clonal variations of Shiraz and Grenache. This Grenache is a brilliant amalgam of fragrance and grunt, thanks to the careful clonal selection and extensive blending trials undertaken before settling on the final ‘just right blend’. Whilst called Sieben Klon (Seven Clones) the Grenache actually includes 8 separate clones... as follows. BVRC38 – This is one of the nursery clones and has proved to be a great backbone, a bit of a goldilocks, Just right. Lovely red fruits, balance, mid weight and acidity. Simple and clean, not overly complex but blends well with everything... 30% of this clone was whole bunch fermented. Vine Vale Ancestor 1854 – This one is a bit more beastly, darker fruit spectrum and fuller richer palate, still plenty of subtlety but with some beautiful earthen tones. McLaren Vale High Sands – Without picking favourites this one is a beauty, lifted aromatics, mid weight, fine tannins, complex and saline edge, ocean mist. Ethereal Greenock Moppa Selection – Cuttings were taken from the Moppa foothills behind the town of Greenock. This clone is quite unique in its structure as well as noticeably darker colour than most, while still retaining a vibrant fruit character. Ebenezer Selection –This clone is elegant and complex, with a finely tuned tannin profile and lifted red fruit. Langhorne Creek Selection– This clone retains wonderful acidity and has a piercing fruit and aromatic profile, the odd one out as picked much earlier ~1.5-2 weeks before the others. Krondorf Selection– High end lifted fragrance and bouncy jubey fruit, as well as an underlying savouriness which rounds out the palate nicely.

    92 Sam Kim, Gold Medal
The best vintage yet of this superb Monty from the Fleurieu Peninsula. A beautifully structured mid-weight wine. Powerful blue and black fruits, black cherry and bay leaf. Quite big by Monty standards with a decent lick of oak. Needs decanting to coax out the fruit suggesting that will be a long-lived wine.

A stunningly complex Sangio which opens up over 24 hours. So this one is definitely worth decanting! Red fruits, wood smoke, chalky tannins, rhubarb, blue fruits, tarragon, thyme and graphite. A stunning accompaniment to a meat and cheese plate, prosciutto pizza and most tapas.

A single vineyard temp from and highly regarded Macclesfield Vineyard. Medium-bodied with an emphasis on red fruits, violets, cherry, hints of cola, and spice. Length is good, perfect with Tapas.
