The Class of 96: 96 Points & Above

Half a dozen properly exceptional reds, all of which have picked up a 96pt score or better somewhere. More importantly, we’ve ‘researched’ these frequently and love ‘em. Stonehouse’s Barossa Shiraz, which has been compared to Penfolds Grange, Martins’ 97 pointer, Majella’s 4 x trophy winner which was named Winestate Magazine’s Cab of the year and more. All superb wines available at a very tidy price in this bundle.

    Barossa Valley, SA
    96pts Sam Kim
Even more concentrated than the 2018 vintage. A massive, deep and complex expression of the best bits of the Barossa Valley. Dark chocolate, liquorice, tobacco leaf, cedar, cassis, plums, cherries, spice and plenty of cedary oak and tannins. Incredible.
    Barossa Valley, SA
96pts Sam Kim, 94pts James Suckling
Better again than the incredible '21 vintage of the Neldner which was compared by one wine writer to Penfolds Grange. Handpicked grapes from an 80 year old contoured vineyard in Gomersal. Long slow fermentation including more than 10% whole bunch fruit before basket pressing into 30% new oak inc. both French and American. A stunningly perfumed nose leads to a palate with exceptional structure and richness. Red fruits, black fruits, coffee, cherries, red plum, dark chocolate, spice and fine, powdery tannins to finish. A pinnacle Barossa Shiraz experience.
    McLaren Vale, SA
97pts Sam Kim, 96pts Ken Gargett, 96pts Kim Brebach, 96pts Winestate Magazine, Gold - CWSA
The Martins has maintained the exceptionally high standard it set with the 2018 vintage. Fruits are blacks and blues, with blueberries, blackberries, olive tapenade, cedar and vanilla populating a powerful and long palate. The tannins are polished, waxy and plentiful. The overall package, outstanding!
    Adelaide Hills, SA
Trophy, 2 x Gold Medals, 95pts Sam Kim, 96pts Kim Brebach
Showing exceptional colour, this Syrah immediately presents flavours of black and blueberries, cherry, and a hint of white pepper. It delivers a beautiful velvet trail with oak detected in the background. This is a quintessential modern Australian shiraz that is absolutely worthy of your consideration.
    Clare Valley, SA
96pts Kim Brebach, 95pts Wine Pilot, 94pts Sam Kim
A riper, darker and more supple expression of Peppertree Shiraz which retains the hallmark spice and subtlety. It was aged in old oak and released at 5 years of age – ready to drink! This is balanced and fresh, offering dark fruits, cherries, violets, dark chocolate, savoury notes and white pepper. Drink any time over the next 10+ years.
    Coonawarra, SA
6 x Gold Medals, Top Gold - Royal Adelaide Wine Show, 4 x Trophies including Winestate's Cabernet of the Year
Coonawarra producer Majella is one of the most awarded wineries in the land. The family have been in the region for 5 generations, first planting vines in 1968. Today they have 144 acres of stunning vineyard and a trophy cabinet which is as chokkers as Jabba the Hut’s dressing gown. Their Composer 21 Cabernet has picked up a gold medal at the Royal Adelaide Wine show, 5 other golds, a top gold and 4 trophies, including the Winestate Magazine Trophy for best Cabernet of the year!!! This is medium bodied with bright red and blue fruits and cassis. There’s subtle French oak cedar and plenty of fine but assertive tannins on the finish.
