Picardy Dowie Doole Best Wines Under $50

Sourced entirely from the Dowie vineyard in Blewitt Springs which was planted in 1933. These may be the oldest, still bearing chenin blanc vines in Australia. The wine launches with notes of struck match, reflective of the barrel work done with this wine in French oak. The palate is textural, offering red fruits, lemon, ginger, orange blossom with a wonderfully creamy aspect, with some cedary grain from the oak. Acid is plentiful, the finish long and mineral. Since 1996, Chris Thomas has maintained a shiraz solera which form part of this lip smacking sparkling. The solera contains some of the best shiraz Chris has made over the last 20+ years and is used sparingly and exclusively to add the finishing touches to his sparkling shiraz each year and adds depth of flavour and complexity. This is sparkling shiraz as we love it- opulent, slightly sweet, with richness, complexity, oak and plenty of fine tannins. A properly exceptional SBS from Picardy in Pemberton Western Australia. Three separate clones of SB are used, with 10% of the fruit whole bunch pressed and 2 different yeasts used to help build complexity. On opening it seems soft and delicate but as it airs, minerality, guava, lime, passionfruit and all manner of complexities emerge. If you are into Rhone wines, this is the Aussie Shiraz for you. Medium bodied with a slightly richer texture than we were expecting based on our experience of previous vintages.
