Picardy Pemberton Pinot Noir 2018

$40.00
Pinot Noir is Bill and Dan Pannell’s great love, especially the Pinots of Burgundy. With every year Bill and Dan get a little closer to making ‘perfect Pinot’ and this the 2018 is clearly the finest so far. When our buyer Matt left Picardy (he was vineyard serf and assistant winemaker until 2003), the wine was made from 5 clones, including the highly prized Burgundian selection ‘777’ which Bill Pannell spent close to a decade getting into Australia. You’ll now find a number of Aussie wineries with 777 planted, all thanks to the hard work of the Pannells. Today the Pinot is made from 11 individual clones, 6 of which have been sourced from Burgundy. Whilst the wine was excellent back in the early 2000’s it is now superb. The 2018 is supremely balanced and succulent, presenting with raspberries, truffle, olive, spices, black pepper and more… keep looking and you’ll keep seeing nuances reveal themselves. The perfect balance of fine boned acidity, mouthfeel and texture makes this wine seem elegant and effortless, yet it is incredibly powerful and deep. Magnificent.

Bill and Dan and team make very limited quantities of superb wines with an emphasis on elegance. They are definitely designed to age and have a fruit intensity that belies their initially genteel appearance. The level of attention in the vineyard is staggering as Matt’s creaking back can attest. Matt was vineyard serf/assistant winemaker at Picardy from 2000-2003.

Heading south from the well-known Margaret River area (and you should – it's a lovely drive), you'll come across Pemberton tucked into the towering trees of the neighbouring forests. Things grow well here, so why not grape vines? History The soil is so good, in fact, local vignerons use a lot of tough love on the vines to keep them producing. Keeping them pruned back and dry is the trick. Chardonnay is the top drop in this climate, but those cool nights and warm days are beneficial to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Pinot noir (French pronunciation: [pinoˈnwaʁ]) is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name may also refer to wines created predominantly from Pinot noir grapes. The name is derived from the French words for "pine" and "black" alluding to the varietals' tightly clustered dark purple pine cone-shaped bunches of fruit. Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, mostly in the cooler regions, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. Despite this, Pinot wines are among the most popular in the world. Joel Fleischman of Vanity Fair describes Pinot noir as "the most romantic of wines, with so voluptuous a perfume, so sweet
