We did a double take when this landed on the tasting bench. This is full bodied, ripe, plush and powerfully fruited. Softened a little by 7 years cellaring, it is drinking magnificently now. We wondered if it would age, so came back to the same bottle 30 hours later and it was even better. Sam Kim gave it 96pts and Ken Gargett has just chimed in with 94 and the words ‘seamless and seductive ... intensity never waivers … excellent length, fine acidity and sleek tannins. This has at least a decade ahead of it, during which period it will surely improve even more. This exceptional old vine Shiraz balances fruit intensity with brightness and is a joy to drink already. That said, it will improve for us to a decade if you can keep your hands off it for a bit. Exceptional depth of fruit and concentration. Great length and yet vibrant enough to make you smile already. A robust wine with black fruits matching its black label and undoubtedly black heart. What! That’s a nice thing to say about a wine and we reckon this is what Jack Sparrow might drink when the rum runs out. There’s also fruit as blue as Jack’s turn’o’phrase when the rum ration evaporates, and plenty of cedary oak and fine tannins to boot. It’s very good and hearty indeed me hearties… This will pair nicely with piratey staples like dried beef and pickled veg.
