A couple of drink now whites from First Creek and Thompsons Margaret River, and a pair which can be enjoyed now or cellared, from Claymore in the Clare Valley and Turkey Flat. First Creek’s Botanica PG is dry with a mineral edge, pear aromas, and flavours. Thompson’s Margaret River SBS sees Sauv Blanc’s crisp, crunchy snow pea and minerality softened by richer, barrel-fermented Semillon to create a wine with verve and mouthfeel. Claymore’s Riesling offers lemons and limes, great length and texture, and the Turkey Flat is a textural blend of the classic Rhone white varietals of Marsanne, Rousanne, and Viognier. Subtle initially, it has the balance and texture to bust out a snappy tango with a roast chook. All kinds of stone fruit going on here; kernels, fresh and roasted. There’s also ginger, cashews and a bready, almost biscuity aspect.

There is also green apple, lime and honeysuckle in the mix. It’s excellent chilled hard and goes nicely with a range of foods, like a Vietnamese poached chicken salad, just go easy on the chilli.     Winemaker Paul Dixon believes 2017 was one of the very best vintages he’s seen and the proof is in your glass… this wine is of a quality and depth of flavour you won’t normally find at $25.
