Cape Jaffa Wine Packs

Sometimes only a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc will do. So here are six exceptional examples for you to have a crack at, from WA, Coonawarra and the Adelaide Hills.

Picardy’s Sauv Blanc Sem (85% SB) is superb and age-worthy. Three distinct clones of Sauv Blanc are used along with two different yeast strains. On opening it seems soft and delicate, but as it airs, minerality, guava, lime, passionfruit and all manner of complexities emerge. Deep Wood's trophy-winning Margaret River SSB is also a cracker, as persistent as it is aromatic and laden with citrus and tropicals. The Chain of Ponds SB is crisp and offers a lovely mix of greenery and passionfruit.

The Riposte, made by the legendary Tim and Nick Knappstein, is textural, succulent and pungent; a joy to drink. Howard are major growers in the Adelaide Hills and supply substantial quantities of fruit to what are arguably the two best known producers of SB in the region. This, their own bottling, is of course excellent too. Finally, the Cape Jaffa SB is also lovely with tropical fruits, citrus and more at play.

It's been a while since we rolled out a double dozen. Fair to say they have always sold well and offer excellent coverage for the requirements of the silly season.

Crackers here like Mitchell Kalmar - a $50 a bottle, single vineyard Shiraz, Deep Woods SBS - a trophy winner from Margaret River. Showblock Rosie, a 95 point, $85 a bottle blend from McLaren Vale and Greenock Estate's Sieger old vine Barossa Shiraz. Retail on this one is $50 and it represents incredible value. We reckon there are a couple of Barossa producers who'd offer this wine at $100 or more.

Something special here from the Barossa, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and the Limestone Coast, for your recipient, wherever they might be in Oz. The Cape Jaffa is the life of the party, with lovely fruit aromatics and a medium bodied palate. Karl's Scepter Coonawarra Cab offers violets, black tea and blue fruits and, like the Jaffa, is drinking a treat at the moment. Curtis' Small Batch Shiraz steps up the intensity, showcasing old vine, black McLaren Vale Shiraz to full advantage. It is both compelling and moreish. Finally, we have the Yaldara Grand Cuvée Shiraz, a $250 a bottle, 96-point Barossa beauty absolutely stacked with black fruit intensity. Any more loaded and the bottles might just spontaneously crack. Decant or cellar this one!
