A wonderfully flavoursome mix of wines, all of which can be enjoyed over the next couple of years. First stop, a couple of contrasting Chardies. The Parker is textural and creamy, with plenty of stonefruits, a squeeze of grapefruit and a lick of French oak. The Cool Woods is also creamy but the palate is more textural and flinty, the stonefruit a little more restrained. Both are delicious. Idyll’s Sauv is linear and herbaceous. Zilzie’s gold medal winning Coonawarra Cab conjures juicy red fruits and blackcurrants, and finishes with fine tannins. Thompson’s Margaret River ripper is a complex wine offering dark fruits, dark chocolate, tomato leaf, plums, white pepper and violets. Nugan’s Passo Shiraz is made in the Appassimento style made famous by the Amarone wines of Valpollicella. High-quality fruit is picked and then air-dried before fermentation, building concentration, colour, smoothness and richness. This one is excellent, juicy, rich with an incredibly smooth palate and great depth of flavour. There are blue and black fruits, pudding spices, plenty of acid and fine tannins.
