Brunello di Montalcino (brown one of Montalcino), is made from 100% Sangiovese from the Brunello di Montalcino region, which along with Barolo, was the equal first Italian wine region awarded DOCG status, the highest available. It is considered one of the greatest wines on earth. Made from a local clone of Sangiovese, called Prugnolo Gentile, which is thicker skinned, more tannic and acidic than the sangio clones of Chianti and elsewhere in Italy, Brunello is prized for its intensity and depth of flavour and ageability. The Bartali is a full bodied and sense enveloping wine, packed with cherries, tobacco, herbs, spice, espresso, leather and more. Powerful, long, persistent and finished with robust but fine tannins. 2020 was a low cropping, intensely fruited vintage - fairly consistently warm and foliage was retained until harvest; qualities which have led to an excellent vintage! Morellino di Scansano, means Sangiovese from Scansano, Scansano being a hilly coastal reqion of Maremma in Tuscany which is renowned for its dry climate, volcanic soil and maritime climate. This is a 'first selection' Scansano, with exceptional fruit fermented and aged in oak. Rosso di Montalcino is Sangiovese from Montalcino, often declassified Brunello. With its fruit intensity and 12 months ageing in oak, this is very much in the baby Brunello mould. A wonderful, textural, stonefruit driven and buttery, full bodied Chardonnay. Just the best fruit is taken from Dowies elevated, sandy soiled Blewitt Springs Vineyards. After a gentle press without the use of rollers, a mix of whole berries and juice is inoculated with yeast, and once that is rolling is transferred to older French oak. Since 1996, Chris Thomas has maintained a shiraz solera which form part of this lip smacking sparkling. The solera contains some of the best shiraz Chris has made over the last 20+ years and is used sparingly and exclusively to add the finishing touches to his sparkling shiraz each year and adds depth of flavour and complexity. The previous vintage picked up 96 points from Kim Brebach who said, "Decades ago, I had the privilege of tasting a group of Barolos and Barbarescos made by Giovanni Gaia. These wines had layers of deep flavour, ranging from smoked meats and old leather to licorice, gravel dust and tar. The Dowie Doole Architect reminded me of those wines because it had some of those characters, even if the expression was more restrained. Give it time, and I think you’ll be richly rewarded.
