Its bigger than Pinot, and of course has a different flavour profile, but in the UK plenty of punters who drink Pinot are equally enamoured of Bardolino. 'But it is made from the same grapes as Amarone', we hear you say. It is, and Bardolino is only half an hour from that region, but the wines are altogether brighter and far more delicate than you'll find there. This Bardolino sees about 6 months in oak, followed by some time in tank prior to bottling – red fruits and violet form the nose. It is red fruity, pulpy and fleshy and finishes tight and dry, with excellent length, minerality, plenty of acid and fine tannins. Drink it with rich meaty dishes or oily fish. Less than 200 dozen were produced of this magnificently concentrated and impossibly smooth beast. The best fruit is hand selected from the lowest yielding rows of the winery's best vineyard in Marananga. This was supplemented in '23 by fruit which used to supply the incredible Magpie Estate Malcolm Shiraz. Some whole bunch and 100% whole berries are fermented slowly in open fermenters before basket pressing into French oak. Another delicious release of Hillside Shiraz from low yielding vineyards in Marananga, old vines from Stonewell, planted to the R6 and 1654 clones. Serious, old vines Grenache this, with a degree of intensity you don’t always find in Grenache. As per every vintage released so far, the '23 is bolstered by the inclusion of some powerful, low yielding old vine Shiraz. A red and black fruit perfume abounds. A tightly coiled Cab that needs a little coaxing by way of an hour or 2 in the decanter. While that's happening, turn your thoughts to lamb and what you might be eating in an hour or 2 when the wine is cherry ripe. Funnily enough, we found cherries here, along with blackcurrant, cocoa, tomato leaf and a plushness emerging from an intense baseline once the wine had gulped a little air.
