Bodegas Mazas is a tiny, high-end, old-vine producer based in Spain’s Toro region. Toro is renowned for wines of even greater intensity than Rioja, working primarily with Tempranillo, alongside Mazas’ prized old bush-vine Grenache and Verdelho. Mazas is defined by meticulous hand-selection of fruit from very old vines, sustainable vineyard practices, and a relentless focus on quality. Many of their vineyards yield less than 0.4 tonnes per acre, delivering extraordinary concentration and natural balance. Winemaker María de Una credits the poor soils of the Mazel Cera ridge for both the naturally low yields and the distinctive saline, creamy texture that underpins Mazas’ wines. Oak is handled with equal precision: exclusively French oak, with every barrel individually selected for purity and discretion, ensuring the influence supports—never overwhelms—the fruit.
