'But it is made from the same grapes as Amarone', we hear you say. It is, and Bardolino is only half an hour from that region, but the wines are altogether brighter and far more delicate than you'll find there. This Bardolino sees about 6 months in oak, followed by some time in tank prior to bottling – red fruits and violet form the nose. It is red fruity, pulpy and fleshy and finishes tight and dry, with excellent length, minerality, plenty of acid and fine tannins. Drink it with rich meaty dishes or oily fish. This is the seventh release of their flagship ‘Hills shiraz and as usual you’re hit immediately with a waft of black and blue fruits and the trademark white pepper that announces this wine as a “hills monster". The Grenache (from 95 year old bush vines) was fermented on skins for 10 days after harvest with a small element of whole bunch. The shiraz is from Blewitt Springs and fermented on skins for 8 days then pressings were added back in. Both wines were then transferred to 8 and 9 year old barrels for the wines to develop without the intrusion of oak flavour.

This is a magnificent blend of robust, full bodied shiraz with spice and chocolate offset by the juicy red and blue fruits of old vine grenache. A wonderful wine to enjoy now but the structure suggests it has 10-15 years of improvement ahead of it.
