The trophy winning Clare Grenache from Kilikanoon and the superb 95 point Durif from Curtis have been in our stable for a while, as has the seven clone Barossa Grenache from the Lienert Brothers. The new stuff? Magical old vine Grenache from Songlines made by Tom White of Lone Palm fame! It is superb. Also a couple of 'new to us' Barossa beauties from White Gate. White Gate are low-fi, or perhaps more accurately, light touch. They work primarily with organic and biodynamic producers, pick early and make minimal additions to the wine during ferment and prior to bottling. They figure that starting with A-grade fruit and picking a bit earlier than the norm allows them to bypass a lot of the corrective work that has to be otherwise undertaken to ensure wine stability and longevity. As a bonus, this allows the fruit to really shine. The proof is in the pudding and we can heartily attest that the pud is good!

Fruit comes from estate vines grown in the Piedmont sub region of Asti, perhaps the best place in the world to grow Barbera. Specifically, the vines are on the slopes of the San Marzano hills. This wine is made in tiny quantities and is of exceptional quality. After a quick decant wonderful red fruits, violets, cherries, florals, earth, coffee and other goodies emerge. - Ca’ de Lion Monteluna Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2021$65.00Produced in Piedmont, specifically in the famed Langhe Hills, this beautifully structured Nebbiolo is aged for 12 months in a combination of large format French oak and stainless steel. This is more approachable than an equivalent Nebb from Barolo, the tannins, whilst noticeable and an important part of the wines structure, being less strident than you'll find in most wines from nearby Barolo or Barbaresco. Lots going on here from violet and red fruit aromatics, fresh straw, vanilla, liquorice and spice through truffles, which will continue to develop as the wine ages, plus tobacco and dark chocolate. - Lienert Vineyards 'Sieben Klon' Barossa Shiraz 2020Special Price $30.00 Regular Price $50.00An exceptional wine, even more powerfully fruited than the 2019. Made by former Penfolds St Henri growers, the Lienert brothers. Each of the 7 distinct clones were harvested and fermented separately with the harvest date chosen to best allow each grape to express its best characters. For instance, the EVOS12 (Eden Valley clone) was harvested earlier than the others to allow for a beautiful perfume and liveliness in the final wine. Fermentation is done in tiny open top fermenters which are hand plunged up to 4 times a day. Certain clones are fermented cooler to better express delicate aromatics whilst some are plunged and pumped over heavily to achieve a more structural element. The trick is finding the right balance. - Lienert Vineyards Sieben Klon Grenache 2022Special Price $30.00 Regular Price $50.00The Lienert’s have been farming in the Barossa for 150 years and decided to add some vines to their property about 20 years ago. The first fruit from 2004 and 2005 vintages went straight to the pool room, aka into Penfold’s St Henri. Funnily enough they then planted a lot more vines and introduced many more clonal variations of Shiraz and Grenache. This Grenache is a brilliant amalgam of aromatics and pristine fruit, thanks to the careful clonal selection and extensive blending trials undertaken before settling on the final ‘just right blend’. Whilst called Sieben Klon (Seven Clones) the Grenache actually includes 8 separate clones. This vintage is a little lighter, yet more aromatically lifted than the 21 vintage. It’s a cracker. - Manser 'Block 4' Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2022Special Price $60.00 Regular Price $65.00This is the seventh release of their flagship ‘Hills shiraz and as usual you’re hit immediately with a waft of black and blue fruits and the trademark white pepper that announces this wine as a “hills monster". The palate is full bodied and it’s here you see even more layers of complexity and intrigue, no doubt due to the co-fermentation of 5 different clones scattered throughout this unique vineyard. This will offers years of cellaring but to enjoy now, bust out the decanter for an hour to release all of this lovely flavour.

The shiraz is from Blewitt Springs and fermented on skins for 8 days then pressings were added back in. Both wines were then transferred to 8 and 9 year old barrels for the wines to develop without the intrusion of oak flavour.
This is a magnificent blend of robust, full bodied shiraz with spice and chocolate offset by the juicy red and blue fruits of old vine grenache. A wonderful wine to enjoy now but the structure suggests it has 10-15 years of improvement ahead of it. The wine was then transferred to 8 and 9 year old barrels for the wine to develop without the intrusion of oak flavour. This is McLaren Vale Grenache in all it playful and complex glory. The nose shows a variety of red and blue fruits of raspberry and blueberry, apparent as soon as you open the bottle, the palate is brooding and complex with layers of juicy fruits and a dry mouthfeel underpinned by powdery tannins… one for the cellar or a brief decant will open this beauty up for maximum enjoyment.
