Expressive and fruit driven, this Barbera from Asti in Piedmont is deep, juicy and intense, stopping just short of being rich, though that will come with age. Fruit comes from estate vines grown in the Piedmont sub region of Asti, perhaps the best place in the world to grow Barbera. Specifically, the vines are on the slopes of the San Marzano hills. Produced in Piedmont, specifically in the famed Langhe Hills, this beautifully structured Nebbiolo is aged for 12 months in a combination of large format French oak and stainless steel. This is more approachable than an equivalent Nebb from Barolo, the tannins, whilst noticeable and an important part of the wines structure, being less strident than you'll find in most wines from nearby Barolo or Barbaresco. Lots going on here from violet and red fruit aromatics, fresh straw, vanilla, liquorice and spice through truffles, which will continue to develop as the wine ages, plus tobacco and dark chocolate. A wonderful, textural, stonefruit driven and buttery, full bodied Chardonnay. Just the best fruit is taken from Dowies elevated, sandy soiled Blewitt Springs Vineyards. After a gentle press without the use of rollers, a mix of whole berries and juice is inoculated with yeast, and once that is rolling is transferred to older French oak. The previous vintage picked up 96 points from Kim Brebach who said, "Decades ago, I had the privilege of tasting a group of Barolos and Barbarescos made by Giovanni Gaia. These wines had layers of deep flavour, ranging from smoked meats and old leather to licorice, gravel dust and tar. This is the seventh release of their flagship ‘Hills shiraz and as usual you’re hit immediately with a waft of black and blue fruits and the trademark white pepper that announces this wine as a “hills monster". The palate is full bodied and it’s here you see even more layers of complexity and intrigue, no doubt due to the co-fermentation of 5 different clones scattered throughout this unique vineyard.
