Its bigger than Pinot, and of course has a different flavour profile, but in the UK plenty of punters who drink Pinot are equally enamoured of Bardolino. 'But it is made from the same grapes as Amarone', we hear you say. It is, and Bardolino is only half an hour from that region, but the wines are altogether brighter and far more delicate than you'll find there. This Bardolino sees about 6 months in oak, followed by some time in tank prior to bottling – red fruits and violet form the nose. It is red fruity, pulpy and fleshy and finishes tight and dry, with excellent length, minerality, plenty of acid and fine tannins. Drink it with rich meaty dishes or oily fish. Fruit comes from estate vines grown in the Piedmont sub region of Asti, perhaps the best place in the world to grow Barbera. Specifically, the vines are on the slopes of the San Marzano hills. Produced in Piedmont, specifically in the famed Langhe Hills, this beautifully structured Nebbiolo is aged for 12 months in a combination of large format French oak and stainless steel. This is more approachable than an equivalent Nebb from Barolo, the tannins, whilst noticeable and an important part of the wines structure, being less strident than you'll find in most wines from nearby Barolo or Barbaresco. Lots going on here from violet and red fruit aromatics, fresh straw, vanilla, liquorice and spice through truffles, which will continue to develop as the wine ages, plus tobacco and dark chocolate. This is Hirsch Hill's flagship Chardonnay, estate grown in the Toolangi sub-region of the Yarra Valley. A cracking Chardy offering florals, green apple, spice, hazelnut, stonefruit and more. Plenty of acid here, a creamy palate and judicious use of French oak make this an almost complete expression of cool climate Chardonnay. The only thing that can make it better is time. This is the seventh release of their flagship ‘Hills shiraz and as usual you’re hit immediately with a waft of black and blue fruits and the trademark white pepper that announces this wine as a “hills monster". The palate is full bodied and it’s here you see even more layers of complexity and intrigue, no doubt due to the co-fermentation of 5 different clones scattered throughout this unique vineyard. The Grenache (from 95 year old bush vines) was fermented on skins for 10 days after harvest with a small element of whole bunch. The shiraz is from Blewitt Springs and fermented on skins for 8 days then pressings were added back in. Both wines were then transferred to 8 and 9 year old barrels for the wines to develop without the intrusion of oak flavour.

This is a magnificent blend of robust, full bodied shiraz with spice and chocolate offset by the juicy red and blue fruits of old vine grenache. A wonderful wine to enjoy now but the structure suggests it has 10-15 years of improvement ahead of it.

Spectacularly graceful yet powerful Chardy made from Dijon clones 76, 95, 96 and 277. Stonefruits, citrus, hazelnuts, ginger powder, florals and crystalline acidity. Maximum of 3 tonnes per acre from their non-irrigated vineyard. Fruit is handpicked at about 12 Baumé with 40% retained as whole bunches. The wine is lees stirred in barrel once a week. The net effect is a wine with balance, precision and purity, with intense stonefruit carried forward by grapefruity acidity which is softened by creaminess and complexed by super high-quality French oak and a slight phenolic grip.
