Brunello di Montalcino (brown one of Montalcino), is made from 100% Sangiovese from the Brunello di Montalcino region, which along with Barolo, was the equal first Italian wine region awarded DOCG status, the highest available. It is considered one of the greatest wines on earth. Made from a local clone of Sangiovese, called Prugnolo Gentile, which is thicker skinned, more tannic and acidic than the sangio clones of Chianti and elsewhere in Italy, Brunello is prized for its intensity and depth of flavour and ageability. The Bartali is a full bodied and sense enveloping wine, packed with cherries, tobacco, herbs, spice, espresso, leather and more. Powerful, long, persistent and finished with robust but fine tannins. Carlos Serres is a bit of an OG - one of the few Rioja producers with a century of winemaking behind them. Carlos was actually named Charles, a French Winemaker who left Bordeaux, fed up with dealing with phylloxera riddled vineyards, landing in Spain. He founded the first winery in Rioja with export certification and applied French winemaking techniques to Rioja fruit. Pretty soon, there was a demand for Rioja in the rest of Europe and the US.

Carlos Serres Crianza is 100% Tempranillo and spends 14 months in a combo of French and American oak. Being 'Crianza', the wine has spent a year in barrel, and another on bottle prior to release. Typically aged in older oak, Crianza can have quite assertive tannins and fruit which is intense whilst retaining great freshness. This is a particularly good example, packed with red fruits, cherries, spice, oak and nervy acidity.

Winemaker Paul Gordon works 2 very different ferments here... one aromatic ferment... where juice was cold settled, racked with low solids and cold fermented using an aromatic yeast. The other portion was fermented with whole solids and natural yeast at a warmer temperature, then allowed to undergo malo-lactic fermentation to promote mouthfeel and length. A slightly pink sparkling this one. It’s labelled rosé but to us seems much more like a traditional cool climate Chardy Pinot sparkling and a bloody good one at that.
