Gold Medal, 97pts Sam Kim, 94pts James Halliday, 95pts The Real Review, 95pts Bob Campbell
This is unequivocally an even better edition of the Martin’s than we have seen previously, which is perhaps no surprise given it is a product of the 2018 vintage. Again, we see relatively low alcohol for a big Aussie red which, perhaps counterintuitively, allows the wine to appear as more fruit dense and concentrated than it might if it were half a degree or a full degree more ‘potent’. Fruits are blacks and blues, depth and length are superb, cedar and vanilla are a perfumed accompaniment to the fruit rich nose, and the tannins, polished, waxy and plentiful. The overall package, outstanding!

Handpicked grapes from an 80-year-old contoured vineyard in Gomersal. Long slow fermentation including 10% whole bunch over 10 days before basket pressing into 30% new French and 70% older oak. A spicy and brightly fruited nose leads to a palate with exceptional concentration and structure. Red fruits, black fruits, compote, coffee grounds, plum, star anise, cocoa powder, black tea and fine, powdery tannins to finish. Really beautifully balanced.

Wow! A rich, voluptuous yet well structured red from Dandelion’s biodynamic Firehawk Farm vineyard. Inky black fruits are pierced by blackberries and then scented with cedar and spice. Long, rich and balanced. An exceptional wine.
    1 x Pasha McLaren Vale Shiraz 2018 (RRP $100.00)

Gold Medal, 96pts Winestate, 95pts Ned Goodwin, 95pts Kim Brebach, 96pts Sam Kim
This is thrilling! It’s old-school but perfectly balanced. ‘Tis packed with uber ripe, suppurating black fruits, dark cherry, compote, notes of furniture polish and spice, black pepper, chocolate, tobacco, and leather. The richness is tamed with good acidity, providing a backbone for all that expressiveness to hang on to and in so doing, show to best effect. Stunning!

Produced from 120-year-old bush vines, this is an exceptionally concentrated wine. Dark fruits are bolstered with red as the wine straddles the line between confection and good black stuff and the wine finishes with super fine tannins. Superb.

Durif is the genetic offspring of Shiraz and Pelourisin. It’s rare and we love it here at WD. It is drought tolerant and retains acidity and bright fruit even when very ripe. Handled well it makes fruit-dense yet lively wines with an inky core and a strong spine of acidity. Winemakers use phrases like ‘Shiraz on steroids' and ‘akin to drinking fountain pen ink’ to describe it. This Curtis edition is a little more elegant than most and packs, plums, blackberries, black cherries, black olive, vanilla, cedar, and more into a thyme spritzed package which is gorgeously sumptuous.

Trophy, 6 x Gold Medals, 96pts Wine Matrix, 96pts Sam Kim, 95pts Winestate Magazine
A rich and inviting perfume on the nose, with red fruits, coffee, black fruits, pepper, and clove all in evidence. The palate is rich, big, smooth, and intense and the wine finishes with plush silken tannins. Good already and has the legs to stay out in front for another decade.
    1 x Alpha Crucis Syrah 2018 (RRP $55.00)
    McLaren Vale, SA
95pts James Halliday, 95pts Sam Kim
Another wow moment on the tasting panel with all of us giving this wine 97 points. We were very fortunate to pick up an allocation of 240 bottles! This is heavy yet bright and crunchy with high acidity and oodles of red and black fruits melding with blackstrap. Fine tannins and a very long life ahead.

Meymans vineyard provides the foundation for our Kilikanoon Covenant Shiraz. The fruit in this 2018 vintage is deep, rich, black and voluptuous, the oak controlled and cedary, the tannins fine and plentiful. According to Kim Brebach this vintage is a …’perfect pitch, stunning wine. Already drinking well but the balance suggests it will last for 10 years or more. 97+ points’

96pts James Halliday, 93pts Real Review
An opulent wine grown and vinified on the ancient soils of Marananga, a sub-region of the Barossa Valley. Fruits are blue and black, the length and concentration exceptional, and furry tannins to finish. Just entering its prime, this wine has a good decade ahead of it.
    Barossa Valley, SA
95pts James Halliday, 91pts Nick Stock
Vibrant and richly fruited, this is a lively yet slurpable beast. Plums, dark chocolate, cherries, beetroot, spice, pepper and charcuterie all competing for your attention. A cracker now and with 5-8 years ahead of it at least. Fruit is sourced from growers in the Barossa sub regions of Bethany, Vine Vale, Stonewell, Light Pass, Marananga & the Hallett Valley.

94pts Sam Kim, 93pts Kim Brebach
Claymore’s Bittersweet Symphony Cabernet offers a perfume of olives and blue fruits along with some violet. Blackcurrant, plums, a twist of dark chocolate and black olive are at play on the palate. Delicious now but will probably improve for 15 or more years. Decant it a couple of hours before drinking and pair it up with protein like a really good steak or gourmet snaggers if you are planning on drinking it soon.
