    Wirra Wirra has a deserved reputation for great wine and large-scale lunacy. Flying watermelons, giant bells, heroically-proportioned gates.... Their cellar door is an absolute must see for visitors to the Vale. And yes, that is a functioning trebuchet, so ignore the "catapult" description on the web page and refine your knowledge of medieval siege devices.

    (And we would never be so persnickety as to point out that the name of the wirrawirra.com web page showing said device is "cataPLUT". Then again, the sound of this device hurling a bottle wine to it's liquid demise may be, phonetically, just that?)

    The Bird in Hand Winery was established when Andrew Nugent moved deeper into the Adelaide Hills and planted vineyards on Bird in Hand Road, Woodside. The grapes are grown in the mineral rich soils above the 1879 “Bird in Hand” gold mine. The property includes 100 acres of vineyards & olive grove, cellar door, wine & olive production facilities and the picturesque family residence. A second family property is in the Clare Valley. The Bird in Hand brand began in 1997 when viticulturalist and winemaker Andrew Nugent left Tatachilla and planted the family vineyard on Bird in Hand Road Woodside in the Adelaide Hills.

    The original farmhouses were built in 1860 and are now the epicentre of the garden and cellar door at the winery. The original vineyards were planted immediately after the first world war.

    Coriole remains today as a small family owned company specialising in Shiraz, but which has also been at the forefront of producing Sangiovese, and also concentrates on white varieties such as Chenin Blanc and Semillon which particularly suit the McLaren Vale climate.

    Coriole is situated in the undulating hills of the densely planted McLaren Vale region just within sight of the sea and less than an hour from Adelaide.

    Gemtree Vineyards owns 330 acres in the heart of premium wine region, McLaren Vale and has been the home of Paul and Jill Buttery for over 20 years. Located at the foothills in McLaren Flat, the home-block, Gemtree Vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Verdelho. The Tatachilla Road Vineyard, near the coastline, with its 40 year old vines, produces Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Semillon.

    The Gemtree Vineyards label was created in 1998. They are first generation winemakers drawing on the expertise from three generations of grape growing. In a genuine family operation, each member participates in the production and marketing of their wines.

    The Leconfield vineyard was first planted in 1974 with the winery built in 1975 by 76 year old Sydney Hamilton who the dream of making a classic Australian red wine. He selected Coonawarra to make these fine red wines and created legends with his early vintages including the 1978 and 1980 Cabernets.

    The winery was purchased by his nephew, Dr. Richard Hamilton in 1981 who also owned other vineyards and wineries in the McLaren region.

    Since its inception, Leconfield has gained an enviable reputation for its dedication and commitment to producing wines that are a unique, cellarable style of the highest quality.

    This area is both beautiful and ideal for viticulture. The climate is considerably cooler and the soils are quite different to those found in the rest of the region. These give wines from Pikes distinct flavours and aromas.

    Henry Pike's great grandson Edgar continued the Pikes tradition when he and his sons - Andrew and Neil established the Pikes Winery at Polish Hill River Estate.
