We love it when old friends re-join the winedirect.com.au family. We’re pretty darn happy to be featuring Barossa winery Rolf Binder and the premium wines that they have to offer.
After meeting various key players in the wine industry in the early 50s, when Rolf Heinrich Binder and his wife Franziska arrived from Austria and Hungary respectively, they purchased Langmeil Road Winery in 1955 and renamed it ‘Veritas’, inspired by the Latin quote ‘In Vino, Veritas’ – In wine, (there is) truth. In 2005, the winery changed its name to ‘Rolf Binder’ to honour Rolf Heinrich Binder who passed in 2003. Recently, the business has expanded throughout Australia and also internationally, exporting to some 19 countries with their ‘Magpie Estate’ and ‘JJ Hahn’ labels. In 2005, Rolf Binder (junior) was named ‘Barossa Valley Winemaker of the Year’.
US wine critic Robert Parker Junior talks of Rolf Binder as ‘one of my favourite wineries (whose) offerings are never excessively oaked, possess extraordinarily ripe fruit, concentrated fruit, great individuality.’ Currently the winery produces a variety of reds, from quality Barossa and Eden Valley Shiraz and Fortifieds to Malbec and Montepulciano and a selection of whites including Eden Valley Riesling and Tramino Frizzante from 250 acres of vineyard through the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Their winery, which many may remember as the old Veritas ‘shed’ in Tanunda, saw the need for expansion as the business successfully grew in the 90s. The current winery on the corner of Seppeltsfield and Stelzer Roads was built in 1998, ready for the 1999 vintage.
Not too long ago, we sampled the Rolf Binder Heysen Shiraz and Eden Valley Shiraz. Both of these are sensational. The Heysen, matured in French puncheon barrels shows beautiful black and blue fruits and hints of aniseed, plum and chocolate. The Eden is complex and medium bodied, with fine tannins and elegant acidity highlighting a mix of coffee and chocolate built from quality fruit.
As always, don’t just take our word for it – try them today and experience some absolutely golden Barossa booze.
