Picardy Pemberton Pinot Noir 2021

Special Price $58.00 Regular Price $70.00
Pinot Noir is Bill and Dan Pannell’s great love, especially the Pinots of Burgundy. With every year Bill and Dan get a little closer to making the ‘perfect pinot’. When our buyer Matt left Picardy (he was vineyard serf and assistant winemaker until 2003), the wine was made from 5 clones, including the highly prized Burgundian selection ‘777’ which Bill Pannell spent close to a decade getting into Australia. You’ll now find a number of Aussie wineries with 777 planted, all thanks to the hard work of the Pannells. Today the Pinot is made from 11 individual clones, 6 of which have been sourced from Corton, Burgundy. Whilst the wine was excellent back in the early 2000’s, it is now superb, one the best Pinot Noirs made in Australia, year in, year out. The 2021 is perfectly balanced, structured, chalky, elegant and mineral. There are plenty of red fruits, spice, and cedar. The perfect balance of fine boned acidity, mouthfeel and texture makes this wine seem elegant and effortless, yet it is incredibly powerful and deep. Tannins on the finish are glassine in a very Burgundian fashion. Magnificent.

Bill, Dan and team make very limited quantities of superb wines with an emphasis on elegance. They are definitely designed to age and have a fruit intensity that belies their initially genteel appearance. The level of attention in the vineyard is staggering as Matt’s creaking back can attest. Matt was vineyard serf/assistant winemaker at Picardy from 2000-2003.

Pinot noir (French pronunciation: [pinoˈnwaʁ]) is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name may also refer to wines created predominantly from Pinot noir grapes. Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, mostly in the cooler regions, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. It is widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, but is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine.

Despite this, Pinot wines are among the most popular in the world. Joel Fleischman of Vanity Fair describes Pinot noir as "the most romantic of wines, with so voluptuous a perfume, so sweet an edge, and so powerful a punch that, like falling in love, they make the blood run hot and the soul wax embarrassingly poetic." Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon calls pinot "sex in

History

The soil is so good, in fact, local vignerons use a lot of tough love on the vines to keep them producing. Keeping them pruned back and dry is the trick. Chardonnay is the top drop in this climate, but those cool nights and warm days are beneficial to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Keep an eye on reds from this region.

Visting

Visitors should be ready to get outdoors and enjoy the landscape and coasts. It's not every day you can climb an 80 metre tree, after all.
