This Tawny has spent over 38 years in barrel slowly oxidizing and becoming aldehydic in the process. It is amber and brown in colour and packed with nuttiness and raisins. Durif is the genetic offspring of Shiraz and Pelourisin. It’s rare and we love it here at WD. It is drought tolerant and retains acidity and bright fruit even when very ripe. Handled well it makes fruit-dense yet lively wines with an inky core and a strong spine of acidity. Winemakers use phrases like ‘Shiraz on steroids' and ‘akin to drinking fountain pen ink’ to describe it. This Curtis edition is a little more elegant than most and packs plums, blackberries, black cherries, black olive, vanilla, cedar, and more into a thyme spritzed package which is gorgeously sumptuous. Produced from 120-year-old Grenache bush vines and 80 year old Shiraz vines. The fruit is cold soaked for 14 days before a slow ferment. It is then pressed into new and 2 year old oak where it is allowed to mature 18 months. The Martins has maintained the exceptionally high standard it set with the 2018 vintage. The 2018 vintage was one of our finds of the year, being old school, gnarly and dense but with exceptional length. No surprise it took on Grange in a blind tasting and scored more points for wine of the night. The 2019 is an able successor, belting out the same tune from the same hymn book (by that we obviously mean 'Hallelujah' by Lenny Cohen, with Jeff Buckley providing backup vocals). It's dark, graphite-y and dense but with bright notes reflecting the author's lofty aspirations. It needs decanting - as Lenny once wrote, 'Decant everything, that's how the air gets in.'
