Rich, black, dark, deep, powerfully fruited and structured with a decent lick of oak. Old school but drinking beautifully thanks to its age. A stunning Reserve Rioja from Carlos Serres, one of the few century old Rioja producers. This is a blend of 90% Tempranillo with 10% Graciano sourced from the winery's 'Finca El Estanque' vineyard and aged for 2 years in French and American Oak. There is vivid freshness here, in spite of the wines age, and flavours of blackcurrant blackberries, shaved truffle, chocolate, cola, spice and lavender. It’s nice to get your hands on a quality Shiraz with the cellaring already sorted. Feels a bit like having someone else sort your inbox while you play video games or work on your quilting game. If you are into Rhone wines, this is the Aussie Shiraz for you. Medium bodied with a slightly richer texture than we were expecting based on our experience of previous vintages. Pepper, spice, earth and florals here along with smoked meats, spice and plentiful tannins. Good now with a decant, should be a ripper in 5-10 years. Learn More

The 2017 is a worthy successor to the exceptional 2015 and 2016 vintages which scored 96 and 97 points respectively while earning the following praise from wine writer Kim Brebach... 'Penfolds would charge $200 for a wine like this'. The 2017, from a slightly cooler vintage, adds savoury notes to the trademark intense black fruits and spice. The oak is high quality and beautifully integrated and tannins are elegant in both their sufficiency and application. This is good now and has a very bright future ahead. Learn More
