Willunga 100 Tempranillo 2017

Special Price $19.00 Regular Price $25.00
A perfumed nose laden with aromas of black cherries, plum, and spice. The palate is medium bodied and intense with plenty of lip-smacking acidity and super fine tannins on the finish. Brilliantly balanced which makes this lovely now whilst also guaranteeing a long life.

That Willunga 100 makes consistently exceptional wines is little surprise when you consider the lineup of winemakers who have been at the helm. From 2005 to 2009, Stephen Pannell, recognised as one of Australia’s finest winemakers, was chief winemaker.  He was succeeded by Tim James in 2010, who in various past lives has been a managing director of Wirra Wirra a winemaker/production director for Hardy’s and director of the Australian Wine research Institute. Since 2013 the winemaking team has been headed by Mike Farmilo, a former maker of Penfolds Grange, St Henri and Bin 707 and twice winner of the Jimmy Watson Trophy. Mike has been making wine in McLaren Vale for over 30 years and is a legend of the industry.

Less than 40km south of Adelaide, McLaren Vale is another one of South Australia's renowned Shiraz producers, accounting for roughly 50% of grapes crushed annually. The climate is markedly different from the Barossa, being much more Mediterranean with four clear seasons and higher rainfalls. McLaren Vale reds reflect this, showing deep complexity and power along with the ability to cellar for decades. While Shiraz grabs the most attention, chocolate-rich Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays and Viogniers are worth sampling. The climate is influenced by ocean breezes coming in from the Gulf of St. Vincent to the west and the altitude of the Sellicks Hill ... Read Full Article

Its name is the diminutive of the Spanish temprano ("early"), a reference to the fact that it ripens several weeks earlier than most Spanish red grapes. In the last 100 years it has been planted in Mexico, New Zealand, South America, USA, South Africa, Australia, and Canada. In Australia Tempranillo is now grown in many Australian wine regions including McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills, Wrattonbully and in Western Australia. There are now over 200 Australian wine ...
