The Wicks family association with the picturesque Woodside region of the Adelaide Hills starts long before the winery was established. The wine part of story began with the purchase of a 54 hectare property by Tim and Simon Wick in 1999, set along the Inverbrackie Creek the property was planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet. In 2004 they completed their state of the art processing facility to back up the traditional methods used in the creating of their generous hand crafted wines.

Considerably cooler than the surrounding plains, the hills are washed in rain during winter months, and the peaks wrapped in fog. It is considered a high rainfall region compared to other Australian regions, but outside of winter the climate is warm and dry. Night time temperatures are the feature - notably cooler than the day when the sun sets. Worth noting is how the average rainfall increases the higher you go, with Mount Lofty picking up 1400mm on the old splash-o-meter compared to 850mm just 10K down the road in Charleston. This range of moisture and altitudes results in a variety of soils, but in general are sand and clay loam over clay subsoils. ... Read Full Article

A bit of shale and ironstone can be found, and the soil is acidic on average and rarely acidic.

Cabernet Sauvignon is unmistakably one of the world's most recognised red wine varieties. It is produced in most major wine growing regions across the world, from the banks of the Gironde in France to Lebanon's Beqaa Valley, to the valleys of California where it overtook the Zinfandel variety on it's rise to glory. Since the late 1800s Australia has definitely proven itself in the world of the humble 'Cab Sauv'. Speaking locally, I turn the page on my desk copy of Halliday's 'Wine Atlas of Australia & New Zealand', to read: 'Whichever yardstick one adopts, Coonawarra produces most of Australia's great Cabernet Sauvignon.'

Proud Parents

Cabernet Sauvignon was born in the 17th century in an accidental parenting mix-up and is the spawn of a Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc entanglement which occurred in south western France. (Which reminds of a joke where a Chihuahua and a Pug walked out a bar one day..) Immediately its popularity amongst winemakers increased as its
