Viva La Vino Sixer v2.0 – Buy 2, Get a 97pt Yeoman Shiraz worth $250 FREE!

There’s nothing like a recommendation from a friend to tempt you to grab a bottle of wine, especially if it’s not one you’ve tried before. The level of trust implied in a personal recommendation is compelling. Vivino is kinda a global version of that, whereby everyday drinkers through to wine ‘anchors’ can haul away to their heart's content, giving a paddling to or blowing wind into the sails of any wine they have tasted. Once a wine has enough reviews an average score out of 5 will appear, for the wine overall, and vintage specific too. Top of the tree for Australian Shiraz at the time of writing is Pertaringa’s ‘The Yeoman’ Shiraz 2017, with a rating of 4.8 on Vivino, marking it as one of the top 1% of wines in the world. By way of comparison, Henshke’s Hill of Grace rates 4.5 as does Langmeil’s ‘The Freedom’, Clarendon Hill’s Astralis, and Penfolds RWT. Penfolds St Henri sits at 4.4. Jasper Hill’s Georgia’s Paddock sits at 4.3 as does Elderton’s Command Shiraz, and plenty more exceptional wines. Retailing for a staggering $250, we’re offering a bottle of Pertaringa ‘The Yeoman’ Shiraz 2017 free if you pick up 2 of these Viva La Vino Sixers (use code FREEMAN ).

This is unequivocally an even better edition of the Martin’s than we have seen previously, which is perhaps no surprise given it is a product of the 2018 vintage. Again, we see relatively low alcohol for a big Aussie red which, perhaps counterintuitively, allows the wine to appear as more fruit dense and concentrated than it might if it were half a degree or a full degree more ‘potent’. Fruits are blacks and blues, depth and length are superb, cedar and vanilla are a perfumed accompaniment to the fruit rich nose, and the tannins, polished, waxy and plentiful. The overall package, outstanding!

An intense blend from the wineries best fruit from a west facing hillside block in the prized Barossa sub region of Marananga. A mix of mostly old and some new French and American oak is used here, allowing the oak to appear as a character rather than the plot. Black, more black and blue fruits, blackberries, coffee, graphite, chocolate, minerals, liquorice, spice, blueberries, cedar and firm tannins.
    1 x Pasha McLaren Vale Shiraz 2018 (RRP $100.00)

This is thrilling! It’s old-school but perfectly balanced. ‘Tis packed with uber ripe, suppurating black fruits, dark cherry, compote, notes of furniture polish and spice, black pepper, chocolate, tobacco, and leather. The richness is tamed with good acidity, providing a backbone for all that expressiveness to hang on to and in so doing, show to best effect. Stunning!

Intense and velvety black and blue fruit here, along with loose leaf black tea and spices. The acid is fantastic, playing the perfect underscore to the fruit and giving this wine excellent lift and length. Tannins are fine and firm. Superb to drink now and for the next decade.
    Barossa Valley, SA
    93pts James Halliday
A single vineyard Shiraz produced in tiny quantities. Plum, pepper and dark chocolate. A sumptuous Shiraz that finishes with enough acid and tannin to give it length. Will cellar well but is already perfect with red meat.
    1 x Kaesler Durif 2016 (RRP $35.00)
    Barossa Valley, SA
    95pts Kim Brebach
The descriptor ‘Shiraz on steroids’ applies well here. There aren’t too many wines this black or this deep. At first taste you can tell the wine is well structured, yet it seems to have minimal tannin. Keep sipping and you’ll find a zombie army of incredibly fine tannins marching across your palate, building as they travel. Fruit is black, arguably black hole and there are aromas of smoked meats and cold fires. It’s probably time to ignite the charcoal and have yourself a barbie or a wood oven pizza.
