Showy Shiraz incl. Mitolo Marsican Shiraz

It’s Friday night, you’ve taken a load off, ordered pizza, chosen Spotify over Netflix and cracked a bottle of the Monterra Shiraz. Exhale, ahhhhhh! A quick sniff and the first sip follows before your delighted olfactories interject with a panicked ‘Crap, did I just open that really good one I was saving for when we catch up with… (Mum and Dad OR best mate OR The Pope OR Julia Gillard OR Morgan Freeman OR the In-Laws?). Yeah you did, because all of these are absolute crackers and it won’t matter if you are having that lazy glass by yourself with a slice of Margherita or attempting to woo Chewbacca, all of these wines will be the perfect accompaniment. BTW, that awesome bottle of Mitolo Marsican is still safely tucked away in the winedirect.com.au box, phew! Rwaaaarrgh!

    Wines In This Pack
    1 x Mitolo Marsican Shiraz 2015 (RRP $235.00)
    McLaren Vale, SA
97pts Sam Kim, 96pts Wine Advocate
A bestie! A best of - only made in the best years, from the best bits of the best vineyard and then only the best barrels are selected for this wine. The result is a deep and brooding wine packed with cherries, coffee, chocolate, blackberries and blueberries… pause for breath… olives, roasting meats and spice. It’s surprisingly light on its feet for such a complex and powerful wine.
    Barossa Valley, SA
    95pts Sam Kim
Elegant and refined in its stature this is genuine, proper Barossa Shiraz. The fruit is hand-picked, hand plunged and basket pressed before spending 14 months in mostly old French oak resulting in a wine rich and full. Cedary and spiced with deep dark berries.
    McLaren Vale, SA
Gold Medal, 97pts Sam Kim, 94pts James Halliday, 95pts The Real Review, 95pts Bob Campbell
This is unequivocally an even better edition of the Martin’s than we have seen previously, which is perhaps no surprise given it is a product of the 2018 vintage. Again, we see relatively low alcohol for a big Aussie red which, perhaps counterintuitively, allows the wine to appear as more fruit dense and concentrated than it might if it were half a degree or a full degree more ‘potent’. Fruits are blacks and blues, depth and length are superb, cedar and vanilla are a perfumed accompaniment to the fruit rich nose, and the tannins, polished, waxy and plentiful. The overall package, outstanding!

    96pts Sam Kim, Gold Medal
This is a full bodied beast of a Shiraz. We reckon this one will improve with cellaring for 20 years, such is its structure and depth of blue and black fruits. Length and persistence are exceptional. An exceptional follow up to the highly awarded 2016 vintage.
    Barossa Valley, SA
    95pts Sam Kim
A celebration of old vines - this intense cuvée is crafted from vines with an average age of 50+ years. Fruit was hand picked and open fermented, sitting on skins for 10 days prior to pressing and transfer into French oak. The oak is 40% new, the balance 3 y.o. – ensuring enough high-quality oak is present to season the intense fruit without pulling focus from its glory. We found, flint, cranberries, raspberries, cherries, plum, chocolate, black tea, spice and minerality. A stunner.
    2 x Allinda Goulburn Shiraz 2016 (RRP $30.00)
    Goulburn Valley, Vic
An aromatic, silky, spicy, and soft Shiraz offering a lovely combo of red and blue fruits. It’s perfect drinking right now and should be good through to 2026, maybe longer. Relaxed enough to work with a burger or pizza, classy enough to pair with fancier stuff too.
    Fleurieu Peninsula, SA
2 x Gold Medals, 93pts Sam Kim, 93pts Kim Brebach
A deep purple colour announces a wine of depth and intensity. Flavours include black cherries, plum, dark chocolate, and white pepper finished with a little smoky oak. Tannins are fine and supple. Drink over the next 5-8 years.
