Shirazcals: noun – a cheeky group of people who love a selection of Australia’s favourite varietal. Don’t believe us? Believe the booze. Zonte’s plum and chocolate Lake Doctor with 5 golds, a slightly perfumed silky number in Anvers Brabo, Tim Adams' 2012 Bayes Block with plenty of cooler blue fruits, Kilikanoon Meymans with its velvet tea-leaf spice, a faithful full-bodied addition from Curtis Heritage and for something different, Martins Vineyard has plenty of fruit purity without being overly oaky/jammy, made from lovely old McLaren Vale vines.

Allow us to prattle on a little more about this...

A mischievous bunch this lot, a full-bodied offering from Curtis Heritage with plenty of dark, ripe fruits, a 2012 Clare Valley Tim Adams showing plenty of blue fruits – but give it a rip through the decanter to let it dance and bring the fruit to the centre of the circle. Anvers Brabo is tinged with smoked meats and dark plums with some white pepper on the end trail, Zonte’s 5 gold winning Lake Doctor is all about that chocolate, along with dark McLaren Vale fruit and oak spice, Kilikanoon Meymans is also Clare Valley but a little larger than life with cherry, tea-leaf spices and firm tannins, and for something different, Martins Vineyard Limited McLaren Vale Shiraz with beautiful fruit intensity, perfume and accompanying subtle oak textures and a freshness that makes this stand out from the crowd. Stick these in the cellar to let them sleep gracefully or drink them now with a splash in the grape juice jug.
