Chianti, Sangiovese & Other Alternatives From Aus & Europe
It's Chianti Day! That's right; a celebration of all things Sangiovese and Sang-dominant coming out of the Tuscan region of Chianti. To celebrate, we've built an alternatives pack around the delightful Alberto Bartali Chianti, which we import direct. There's also an excellent Sang from Colab, a magical air-dried red from Ca Botta, a multi-clone Grenache from Sieben Klon, ethereal Touriga from Mazza and a magic, highly-awarded grenache from Curtis. 58% off, too!
A blend of Sangiovese with a portion of Canaiolo Nero, this is classic, medium bodied, aromatic and complex Chianti, finished with fine, sandy tannins. There’s bay leaf and sage, sour cherries, tobacco, minerality and savoury aspects here. A joy to drink by itself or with pizza or substantial, meaty dishes.
A stunningly complex Sangio which opens up over 24 hours. So this one is definitely worth decanting! Red fruits, wood smoke, chalky tannins, rhubarb, blue fruits, tarragon, thyme and graphite. A stunning accompaniment to a meat and cheese plate, prosciutto pizza and most tapas.

Black, rich, concentrated and savoury, this wine is made from 14-day air dried, traditional regional grapes Corvina and Rondinella softened by Merlot. It offers black fruits, spice and cedar. The fruit sweetness is excellent and well balanced by savory touches. An absolute bargain.
Candied raspberries dance around a core of dark fruits filled with cherries. An underlying richness leads to a length that doesn’t out stay it’s welcome. Crafted from 120+ year old vines out of McLaren Vale like it’s predecessor it treads the fine line between power and finesse.
The Lienert’s have been farming in the Barossa for 150 years and decided to add some vines to their property about 20 years ago. The first fruit from 2004 and 2005 vintages went straight to the pool room, aka into Penfold’s St Henri. Funnily enough they then planted a lot more vines and introduced many more clonal variations of Shiraz and Grenache. This Grenache is a brilliant amalgam of aromatics and pristine fruit, thanks to the careful clonal selection and extensive blending trials undertaken before settling on the final ‘just right blend’. Whilst called Sieben Klon (Seven Clones) the Grenache actually includes 8 separate clones. This vintage is a little lighter, yet more aromatically lifted than the 21 vintage. It’s a cracker.
Lush and aromatic, this beautifully slurpable Touriga Nacional offers blueberry, plum, blackberry, cocoa, red fruits and cinnamon. Wonderful at room temp, it is also great after 20 mins in the fridge. We love it.

Sangiovese (san-jo-veh-zeh) is a red Italian wine grape variety whose name derives from the Latin sanguis Jovis, "the blood of Jove". Known throughout most of central Italy, outside Italy it is most famous as the main component of the blend Chianti, Carmignano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Morellino di Scansano, although it can also be used to make varietal wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino or Sangiovese di Romagna, as well as modern "Super Tuscan" wines like Tignanello. Young Sangiovese has fresh fruity flavours of strawberry and a little spiciness, but it readily takes on oaky, even tarry, flavors when aged in barrels.
