There’s something very special about old vine McLaren Vale Cabernet. Little surprise it picked up a gold and was the second highest pointed Cab at the 2017 McLaren Vale wine show. This edition is soft and fluffy on opening, but with air starts to show vanilla, blackberries, chocolate, fine grained tannin and a good backbone of acidity. A bit of a sleeper too, we suspect. Whilst it is cuddly, we reckon it will age and improve for up to ten years.

Richard Hamilton and indeed Leconfield wines (same owner and winemaker) have steadily improved in quality every year from 2004. In addition to the wines they regularly produce from their McLaren Vale and Coonawarra vineyards, 2014 sees the addition of a Clare Riesling and Adelaide Hills Savvy Blanc.

Located in McLaren Vale, the Leconfield vineyards that produce Richard Hamilton fruit are well established, with some of the oldest vines in the region.

In a world full of labels and where everything must be put into a category I found myself wondering if we haven't gone too far!
