Richard Hamilton Centurion Shiraz 2017

This is a brilliantly concentrated wine full of layers of flavour, texture and richness. Halliday’s ratings for the previous 10 vintages read thus... 97, 97, 95, 96, 97, 95, 96, 95, 96, 95... and this is as good as the very best vintage produced to date, perhaps a smidge better. Produced from a heritage plot of 120+ year old McLaren Vale vines, it will cellar 30 years plus.

Allow us to prattle on a little more about this...

This Shiraz is sourced from Hamilton’s own tiny patch of 120+ year old vines. When these were planted in 1893 the push for federation had begun in Corowa, Gold was discovered in Kalgoorlie and Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was alive and well hunting Kangaroos in Oz.

A wine for special occasions but don’t keep too long .

Richard Hamilton Centurion Shiraz 2017 – I’ve been a fan of this winery for some years, so they sent me a sample of a wine made from vines that are older than me. Hard to believe, I know. They’re over 100 years old as the name suggests, and the 2017 vintage on the label surprised me, but the wine turned out to be a big old softy after a day or two. Fruit sets the tune here, gorgeous, voluptuous fruit, Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte kind of fruit and Christmas pudding spices, a wine for special occasions but don’t keep too long – I reckon it’s best enjoyed over the next 5 years. 96 points.
