These are all exceptional examples of South Australian Shiraz, from classic Shiraz-growing regions like the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.
Why is 2021 Shiraz so sought-after? Well, that depends where it comes from. But generally speaking, temperatures in South Australia were lower than average, and there was rainfall after two years of drought in some regions, which made this vintage noteworthy.

Made by former Penfolds St Henri growers, the Lienert brothers, each of the 7 distinct clones were harvested and fermented separately - the harvest date chosen to best allow each grape to express its best characters. For instance, the EVOS12 (Eden Valley clone) was harvested earlier than the others to allow for a beautiful perfume and liveliness in the final wine. Fermentation is done in tiny open top fermenters which are hand plunged up to 4 times a day. Certain clones are fermented cooler to better express delicate aromatics whilst some are plunged and pumped over heavily to achieve a more structural element. The trick is finding the right balance. Hand tended vines are picked by a Pellenc select harvester, which pick just the absolute best fruit. 12 separate clones of Shiraz are fermented separately using wild yeast, given extended maceration on skins and matured in French oak for 15 months. Finally, only the best barrels are blended and bottled. That sounds to us like most high-end producer's $60-$100+ Shiraz. No surprise this has picked up 96 points from Halliday and 12 gold medals. TA superb single vineyard, soft, spicy and black-fruited beast with plums and blackberries spiced with pepper and five spice and served on cedary oak. Tannins are fine and soft, making this an excellent accompaniment to food. Like Rhone blends! We love 'em. This is definitely worth a look!
