Picardy Red Wines
Red wine – we like it, you like it. Sometimes it’s really red, sometimes it’s less red. Sometimes it’s Barossa Valley Shiraz, sometimes Coonawarra Cabernet or McLaren Vale Grenache. New world, old world, weird and wonderful, traditional and cutting edge – if it’s red and it passed the Tasting Panel’s approval, it'll be listed here.
Which is the least tannic red wine?
Tannins come from both grape skins and oak. Pinot Noir is generally fairly low in tannins, as is Gamay, Barbera and Dolcetto. Rosé, given its limited skin contact and typical fermentation in stainless steel, is usually very low in tannin.
Red wines that spend no time in oak, or which are matured in older oak tend to have less tannins too.

- Picardy Pemberton Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc 2019$30.00We know this wine pretty well, having tasted every vintage produced since inception. Tight in its youth, this is released with plenty of age so that it's just hitting its straps when you first order it. Medium bodied with plenty of fruit intensity, brightness of fruit and plenty of super-fine tannin. Offers cedar, tobacco, chocolate and blackcurrants. As it ages it will grow increasingly complex, lush and thoughtful. Learn More
- Picardy Pemberton Pinot Noir 2021Special Price $58.00 Regular Price $70.00Pinot Noir is Bill and Dan Pannell’s great love, especially the Pinots of Burgundy. With every year Bill and Dan get a little closer to making the ‘perfect pinot’. When our buyer Matt left Picardy (he was vineyard serf and assistant winemaker until 2003), the wine was made from 5 clones, including the highly prized Burgundian selection ‘777’ which Bill Pannell spent close to a decade getting into Australia. You’ll now find a number of Aussie wineries with 777 planted, all thanks to the hard work of the Pannells. Today the Pinot is made from 11 individual clones, 6 of which have been sourced from Corton, Burgundy. Whilst the wine was excellent back in the early 2000’s, it is now superb, one the best Pinot Noirs made in Australia, year in, year out. The 2021 is perfectly balanced, structured, chalky, elegant and mineral. There are plenty of red fruits, spice, and cedar. The perfect balance of fine boned acidity, mouthfeel and texture makes this wine seem elegant and effortless, yet it is incredibly powerful and deep. Tannins on the finish are glassine in a very Burgundian fashion. Magnificent. Learn More
