Head south from Adelaide for 45 minutes along the coastline and you’ll hit the McLaren Vale wine region, which boasts stunning natural beauty, a Mediterranean climate, and some incredibly talented winemakers. Given that the region accounts for a small percentage of Australia’s total wine production and exports, it certainly punches above its weight in terms of quality, and we reckon the wines coming out of this region are some of the best in the country.

These wines had layers of deep flavour, ranging from smoked meats and old leather to licorice, gravel dust and tar. The Dowie Doole Architect reminded me of those wines because it had some of those characters, even if the expression was more restrained. Give it time, and I think you’ll be richly rewarded. If the price seems steep, keep in mind that a Barbaresco from Gaia will set you back $600." Gently airbag pressed and fermented with the juice being allowed to settle prior to a long, cool ferment to help maintain all the lovely notes from vintage 2024. Following fermentation, the wine was left on lees for the right balance, structure and mouthfeel.
