Forester Estate Lifestyle Shiraz 2023

$28.00

A supremely confident and self-assured wine, with exceptionally bright yet intense red and blue fruits, and spice. Texture is wonderful, the acid tannins balance perfect and the finish a beautiful amalgam of fine fruit tannins and cedary, chewy oak tannins which add complexity. An amazing wine comprising 86% Shiraz and 14% Fer. Fer is an ancient varietal, likely of Basque country origin which is widely planted in Southwest France, and generally makes up 100% of reds coming out of the Marcilliac region. It is one of the grandparents of the superb Carmenere varietal and is prized for its impenetrable black coloring and density of fruit. Flavours sit in the blackberry, cherry and black tea spectrums, and the variety also typically offers a pleasing smokiness.

Kevin McKay originally set up the Abbey Vale vineyard and winery in WA in 1985. HE sold this in 2001 and embarked on a new project, setting up Forester Estate almost immediately. This is a smaller scale operation with the emphasis being firmly on producing the best possible wines, year in, year out. Kevin makes the wines with Todd Payne, who's previous winemaking experience includes vintages overseas, being assistant at Plantagenet, winemaker at Esk Valley in New Zealand. He has been chief winemaker at Forester for over a decade.

History

Much of the regions success dates back to the late 1800's when Italian immigrants Albert Credaro, Jimmy Meleri and Domenic Garuccio planted vines to make some of the good old table wines from the Old Country. Some learned gents took a punt on commercial production in the late 1960's, with the recommendation of the very learned Dr. John Gladstone in mind. The Doc pointed out the Margaret River region cool climate would give growers a fine yield of fruit to work with. Too right he was!

Visiting

Today the area attracts millions of visitors, with the wine being the bog drawcard to a stunning landscape of remarkable biodiversity and pristine coastline.
