Arguably Australia’s most famous wine region, the Barossa Valley hardly needs an introduction. Its reputation has been proven time and time again, and its wines have been celebrated on the world stage for decades, for very good reason. As South Aussies here at winedirect.com.au, we’re big fans of this local wine-producing superstar!
Located in South Australia, an hour or so northeast of Adelaide, the Barossa Valley was founded by German settlers, who took advantage of the warm climate of the region to produce fortified wine, which was popular in Australia at the time. The focus of the region shifted in the mid-20th century when there was a growing demand for premium, non-fortified wines, which are what the region is still known for today.

- Lienert Vineyards 'Sieben Klon' Barossa Shiraz 2020Special Price $40.00 Regular Price $50.00An exceptional wine, even more powerfully fruited than the 2019. Made by former Penfolds St Henri growers, the Lienert brothers. Each of the 7 distinct clones were harvested and fermented separately with the harvest date chosen to best allow each grape to express its best characters. For instance, the EVOS12 (Eden Valley clone) was harvested earlier than the others to allow for a beautiful perfume and liveliness in the final wine. Fermentation is done in tiny open top fermenters which are hand plunged up to 4 times a day. Certain clones are fermented cooler to better express delicate aromatics whilst some are plunged and pumped over heavily to achieve a more structural element. The trick is finding the right balance. - Lienert Vineyards Sieben Klon Grenache 2022Special Price $40.00 Regular Price $50.00The Lienert’s have been farming in the Barossa for 150 years and decided to add some vines to their property about 20 years ago. The first fruit from 2004 and 2005 vintages went straight to the pool room, aka into Penfold’s St Henri. Funnily enough they then planted a lot more vines and introduced many more clonal variations of Shiraz and Grenache. This Grenache is a brilliant amalgam of aromatics and pristine fruit, thanks to the careful clonal selection and extensive blending trials undertaken before settling on the final ‘just right blend’. Whilst called Sieben Klon (Seven Clones) the Grenache actually includes 8 separate clones. This vintage is a little lighter, yet more aromatically lifted than the 21 vintage. It’s a cracker. - Lone Palm Vineyards 'Selection' Shiraz 2023$250.00Less than 200 dozen were produced of this magnificently concentrated and impossibly smooth beast. The best fruit is hand selected from the lowest yielding rows of the winery's best vineyard in Marananga. This was supplemented in '23 by fruit which used to supply the incredible Magpie Estate Malcolm Shiraz. Some whole bunch and 100% whole berries are fermented slowly in open fermenters before basket pressing into French oak. - Lone Palm Vineyards Old Vine Barossa Shiraz 2022$60.00A stunning offering from Lone Palm sourced entirely from 3 small Barossa Vineyards planted in the 1950s and 60s. Vineyards are from the highly prized sub-districts of Ebenezer, Vine Vale and Nuriootpa. Older French and American oak is employed here to allow the fruit to shine, and stunning fruit it is. Satsuma plum, blueberry, dark cherry, spice, chocolate, liquorice and more on the go here.
