Fermented on skins for 10 days after harvest with a small element of whole bunch. The wine was then transferred to 8 and 9 year old barrels for the wine to develop without the intrusion of oak flavour. This is McLaren Vale Grenache in all it playful and complex glory. A wine made specifically for steak you say? Winemaker Hamish MacGowan has had a few careers, Cattle musterering in the NT, wine merchant in the UK, winemaker in Bordeaux, winemaker in Moldova, and winemaker in Vic. Eventually he decided to work for himself, making the perfect wines to pair with his fave thing to eat - Steak. So here it is, cloaked in iridescent purple, ripe black fruits, dark chocolate, vanillin oak and whisper fine tannins. Good by itself? Leasingham wines have been around since the 1890s and have been steered by a series of legendary winemakers over the years. It wasn’t until the early 70s that the Bin series kicked off, with a Bin 61 Shiraz and a Bin 56 Cab Malbec. These were both highly prized for their exceptional quality and regular ability to out-perform wines selling at 2-3 times their asking price. A few of us from WD were lucky enough to attend a vertical tasting with Tim Knappstein (one of the aforementioned and legendary Leasingham alumni) a decade or so ago and came away incredibly impressed with the quality and consistency of the wines. We looked at over 20 vintages, and everything we tasted was still showing fruit, the best of them were exceptional. So it’s a little sad that the '21 may be the last vintage of the Bin 61 Shiraz. Lots of good stuff here, black tea, chocolate, coffee grounds, mint, plum, charcuterie, and blackberries. Serious, old vines Grenache this, with a degree of intensity you don’t always find in Grenache. As per every vintage released so far, the '23 is bolstered by the inclusion of some powerful, low yielding old vine Shiraz. A red and black fruit perfume abounds. Another delicious release of Hillside Shiraz from low yielding old vineyards in Marananga and Stonewell, planted to the R6 and 1654 clones. There’s old vine fruit from Greenock, the vines so old that the clonal selection is unknown. Superb small batch single vineyard PG from Keeda Zilm. Fruit is sourced entirely from Glen Kelly's vineyard in Sevenhill. Pears, spice, crisp green apple and an underlay of lime zest. Plenty of acid here to provide drive and a lovely mouthwatering aspect. The palate is just beginning to show the texture which develops so appealingly as PG ages. Learn More
