Pretty Powerful Pinots
Good Pinot can be pretty or it can be powerful, great Pinot is typically both of these things simultaneously. Here’s 3 for your consideration in this special and very limited offer. The Picardy 2019 is arguably one of Australia’s best. The 19 sold out at the winery in 4 days but fortunately we managed to secure decent stocks at the get go. It offers both ethereal fragrance and length and power. Erin Larkin gave the 2018 a staggering 97 points and suggested that the 2019 is ‘cut from the same cloth... as long as ever... Another triumphant Pinot from Picardy.’ Six Brothers Tassie Pinot 2018 sees a pretty perfume of plums, pomegranate and cherries leading to a palate laden with bright and deep fruits, graphite, spice and plums. Already good, this should be incredible in the next 2-5 years. Finally, the Riposte Adelaide Hills Dagger Pinot is a bright and freshly fruited pinot made from the MV6 clone which tends to produce deeply coloured wines with depth and structure. The Riposte’s full fragrance leads to fruit which is deep, dark and supported by good acidity with spice, cherries and plums sliding into a soft bed of tannins.

Pinot Noir is Bill and Dan Pannell’s great love, especially the Pinots of Burgundy. With every year Bill and Dan get a little closer to making ‘perfect pinot’. 2018 got very close to nailing that brief and perhaps the 2019 Vintage has achieved it. When our buyer Matt left Picardy (he was vineyard serf and assistant winemaker until 2003), the wine was made from 5 clones, including the highly prized Burgundian selection ‘777’ which Bill Pannell spend close to a decade getting into Australia. You’ll now find a number of Aussie wineries with 777 planted, all thanks to the hard work of the Pannells. Today the Pinot is made from 11 individual clones, 6 of which have been sourced from Burgundy. Whilst the wine was excellent back in the early 2000’s it is now superb. The 2019 is perfectly balanced, structured and textural, offering red fruits, mushroom, olive, spice, and more … keep looking and you’ll keep seeing nuances reveal themselves. The perfect balance of fine boned acidity, mouthfeel and texture makes this wine seem elegant and effortless yet it is incredibly powerful and deep. Magnificent.
