Cellared Premium Aussie Shiraz Plus a Bonus Belter

Cellared Premium Aussie Shiraz Plus a Bonus Belter

Sometimes you just want the comfort of a perfectly cellared Shiraz. The tannins softening, the fruit pushing forward, oak and tannin less 'shield wall' and more 'sheet-yeah'. So here they are: Mitchell's stunning, single vineyard Kalmar Shiraz that we sourced direct from the winery; the magnificent and miniscule production Two Sisters Barossa Shiraz; and Sieger's 'take no prisoners' black Barossan. On release, drinking the Sieger must have been a bit like whipping on a pair of pants about two sizes too small; doable, but not without pain! Now it is drinking beautifully, still massive and with huge flavours, but also an undeniable pleasure. A bonus? Sure: a bottle of Yaldara's $250-a-bottle Barossa Shiraz. It's drinkable now, but we'd recommend drinking the rest of the pack now and tucking this one away for a rainy day.

Just the fifth release of Yaldara Grand, and arguably the one which has struck a balance between power and elegance most deftly. Milk and dark chocolate, aniseed, black and blue fruits, tobacco leaf, plus plenty of cedary oak and tannin. Magical.

Intense, old vine Barossa fruit from the incredible 2021 vintage meets French oak and they fall in love. Super concentrated with coffee, chocolate, plums and black fruits. Richness and depth. Alive and lively, yet plush and persistent. Complex balanced and long.

2018 was a pretty fine vintage, and the Mitchell Kalmar Vineyard, quite close to cellar door is an exceptional vineyard. Soooo, in 2018 the Mitchells made the call to pick, vinify and bottle this vineyard with the intention of releasing a standalone wine. It is a ripper, blacker, denser and with exceptional potential for ageing. The Kalmar is laden with black fruits, graphite, spice and more. The texture here is thick, without being overwhelming, and the palate extremely long. Drinkable now, yeppers, but will cellar like a champ too.

The 2020 is a worthy successor to the exceptional 2015 and 2016 vintages which scored 96 and 97 points respectively while earning the following praise from wine writer Kim Brebach … "Penfolds would charge $200 for a wine like this". The 2020, from an incredibly low yielding season adds savoury notes to the trademark intense black fruits and spice. The oak is high quality and beautifully integrated and tannins are elegant in both their sufficiency and application. This is good now and has a very bright future ahead.
