When Pinot is good, it's absolutely magical... and generally terrifyingly expensive.
Common refrains of inveterate Pinot drinkers include 'that's bloody good for $30', and the slightly unconvincing 'nice Pinot', uttered with equal parts relief and lament, 'cos it's decent and tastes like Pinot, but doesn't offer that ethereal, magical, sense-enveloping and expanding magic that Pinot can deliver, albeit frustratingly infrequently.
We're here to fix that today, with this Pinot six-pack, which includes:
2 x $24 Pinots that are better than most $40 Pinots.
This is the Knappstein; medium bodied, powerfully fruited, fragrant, with great acidity. A lovely, moreish drop.
2 x $40 Pinots which are excellent, perfumed, powerful and yet light on their feet.
This is the Heirloom Velvet Fog; wafting an ethereal and refined Pinot fug, medium bodied, powerful, long and lovely.
2 x $70 a bottle, best in class, Burgundian clone STUNNERS.
This is the Picardy, which is in the top handful of Pinots made in Aus. Medium bodied, superlative fruit and glassine, Burgundy-like tannins to finish. Over the past couple of vintages, at least two wine writers have named Picardy their fave Pinot of the year.
Kim Brebach gave it 98 points saying 'I can't remember the last time I scored a wine that high'.
It's that good!
98pts Kim Brebach, 96pts Ray Jordan, 95pts Real Review
The best Picardy Estate Pinot to date, as it's 98 point score from Kim Brebach attests. The 2022 is powerful, fragrant and perfectly balanced. There are plenty of red fruits and spice supported by fine grained, well charred French oak. The perfect balance of fine boned acidity, mouthfeel and texture makes this wine seem elegant and effortless, yet it is incredibly powerful and deep. Tannins on the finish are glassine in a very Burgundian fashion. Magnificent.
A very expressive nose, offering purple Pinot perfume and pristine red fruit aromatics, along with spice. The palate is big by Pinot standards, laden with strawberries, savories, spice, salinity and beetroot. Sensational value.
Typically fresh and zesty. this edition of the Dagger is brimful of with fresh red and forest fruits and more power than we've seen in recent vintages. A modern Pinot in style and unashamedly medium bodied and made to enjoy over the next 5-6 years. The fruit here is quite concentrated and we reckon this is the best Dagger for a few years.
