Saper-What Now? Awesome Aussie Alt-Reds
Here's a slew of alt reds, including Saperavi, Monte, Graciano and Grenache as standalone bottlings, and a couple of superb blends. These are all home grown and all drinking beautifully right now. Sweet fruit tempered by savoury notes, the alcohol's restrained, the tannins fine and mouth watering. Easy to drink but complex, intriguing and delicious.
This includes Heirloom's incredible Alcala Grenache and their Anevo Fortress GTT. These 2 alone, more than cover the asking price of the pack. No filler here though, the other 4 wines all met with big smiles on the tasting panel.

Saperavi is probably the world's oldest cultivated grape variety. It comes from Georgia, bordered by Russia, Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and the Black Sea. It has a deep, inky colour and features flavours of bold dark berries, plums, and spice. It's a full-bodied wine known for its structure, fine tannins, and a savoury, dark-chocolate-tinged finish. Delicious.
Another spellbinding Alcala Grenache; estate grown and entirely sourced from the Firehawk Farm vineyard. Ripe plush fruits of dark cherries and strawberry. Plenty of punchy, exaggerated aromatics from the high % of whole bunch in the ferment and a significant whack of new French oak. Brimming with life, bold, yet nuanced of fruit and just gorgeous.
A delightful, Italian inspired, medium bodied, three way blend of Montepulciano, Negroamaro and Aglianico. Superb fruits here, with cherries, plums, dried oregano, florals and cedar all playing a part in what is both a complex, beguiling and seamless red wine. A ripper, thoroughly deserving of its Gold and Top Gold medals at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show.
Selected from Heirloom’s best McLaren Vale vineyard. We saw musk, plum skin, spice, cherries, earthiness, Earl Grey tea, blackberry and black pepper. A sense enveloping and incredibly beguiling wine finished with a dusting of fine powdery tannins. Magical.
