We kick things off with Leasingham’s Bin 61 Shiraz – a true Aussie legend that’s been made for over 50 consecutive years. Medium-bodied, smooth and spicy, it’s been a crowd favourite for good reason. Those who’ve already tried it clearly agree, with an impressive 4.7-star average rating on our site right now.
From there, we dial up the intensity with the 3 Rings Barossa Shiraz. The brand-new 2022 vintage is in, and while it hasn’t had time to rack up customer reviews yet, if you enjoyed the 2021 (as so many of you did), you’re in very safe hands here – it’s brimming with plush black fruits and Barossa richness.
Next is the Dowie Doole The Architect Single Vineyard Shiraz 2021 from McLaren Vale – a serious step up in pedigree. This one’s pulling a 4.7-star customer average, comes with a couple of 95-point critic reviews, and normally sells for $90 a bottle.
And for the bonus 13th bottle, we’ve gone big: the Lone Palms Hillside Shiraz. A Barossa stunner with massive critic acclaim, this is rich, smooth, black and velvety – a wine that just oozes class.

Another delicious release of Hillside Shiraz from low yielding vineyards in Marananga, old vines from Stonewell, planted to the R6 and 1654 clones. There’s old vine fruit from Greenock, the vines so old that the clonal selection is unknown. Matured in a combination of new French and older American oak, this is a stunning Barossa Shiraz offering black fruits, blue fruits, blackberries, coffee, graphite, chocolate, minerals, liquorice, spice, blueberries, cedar and firm tannins.
Only tiny quantities are made of the Dowie Doole Architect wines, which are the product of the finest of Dowie Doole's A-grade fruit from each vintage ('21 being an incredible vintage has elevated this even further). The '21 is exceptional, and represents a barrel selection chosen from only A-grade parcels from the old, dry-grown Blewitt Springs vineyard. There's brightness with density of blue and black fruits, cedary oak, gravelly tannins and exceptional length.

A rich, expansive morass of relaxed blackness, herbed with mint and splintered with cedar. Dive into a T-Bone, pull the ring on one of these, settle back and enjoy.

Leasingham wines have been around since the 1890s and have been steered by a series of legendary winemakers over the years. It wasn’t until the early 70s that the Bin series kicked off, with a Bin 61 Shiraz and a Bin 56 Cab Malbec. These were both highly prized for their exceptional quality and regular ability to out-perform wines selling at 2-3 times their asking price. A few of us from WD were lucky enough to attend a vertical tasting with Tim Knappstein (one of the aforementioned and legendary Leasingham alumni) a decade or so ago and came away incredibly impressed with the quality and consistency of the wines. We looked at over 20 vintages, and everything we tasted was still showing fruit, the best of them were exceptional. So it’s a little sad that the '21 may be the last vintage of the Bin 61 Shiraz. Lots of good stuff here, black tea, chocolate, coffee grounds, mint, plum, charcuterie, and blackberries. The overall impression is of mid-weight fruit, an even balance between softness, fine tannin and good length. Cracking value for money. Drink now through 2030.
