The Superb Alt-Red Dozen
This is our buyers’ favourite Alternative Reds pack yet.
Heirloom’s Alcala Grenache is one of McLaren Vale’s best — year in, year out. Intense fruit, articulately delivered, it’ll keep the fresh and funky drinkers happy while earning a nod of approval from the Shiraz crowd too.
The Curtis Small Batch Durif is superb — black fruits, fragrant lift, supportive oak and masses of power.
Briar Ridge’s Malbec could be mistaken for the best of Argentina; superb fresh fruit, minimal oak, and beautiful length. Grab a steak and channel your inner Gaucho.
Willow Bridge’s Tempranillo is spicy, dense and deeply satisfying, while the Colours of the South blend — Montepulciano, Negroamaro and Aglianico — is magnificent. Gold and Top Gold at Adelaide, and could easily have taken the Trophy. So complex, yet so easy to drink.
Finally, the Barbera — from a single high-elevation vineyard in Asti — is sublime. Exceptional fruit intensity here, so give it a decant. Big enough for roast meats, and even better alongside a plate of charcuterie.

Dark cocoa, red plum, tobacco, blackberries. Plenty of acid and a long finish with fine tannins. We don't make much Malbec here in Oz, less than Argentina, who grow about 3/4 of the world's Malbec, less than France, the US, and South Africa. A lot of what we do make gets blended away to good effect with Cabernet. It's amazing how often a straight Cab is improved with the addition of Malbec. It's a pity, because Malbec is an exceptional straight varietal, and the Briar Ridge is a great example.
Made From: Estate grown Malbec
Awards: Campbell Mattinson 95 points 'a wine and a half ... a robust expression ... quality is super...'
Aromas and Flavours: Blackberry, tobacco, cocoa, red plums and more
Drink if you like: Bleasdale Malbec
Food: Malbec loves pork and intense cheese. Argentinians consider it the ultimate steak wine.
Willow Bridge continue to impress with their Reserve Tempranillo, and this latest release has just notched up 95 points from Halliday. It’s a juicy, expressive wine, showing vibrant red fruits, high acidity, dried orange peel, leather, spice, cherries, and a touch of liquorice. The palate finishes with waxy tannins. Equally at home enjoyed on its own or alongside food, it pairs beautifully with rich, meat-based dishes.
A delightful, Italian inspired, medium bodied, three way blend of Montepulciano, Negroamaro and Aglianico. Superb fruits here, with cherries, plums, dried oregano, florals and cedar all playing a part in what is both a complex, beguiling and seamless red wine. A ripper, thoroughly deserving of its Gold and Top Gold medals at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show.
